RE: RE: pet sounds...ssc

I don't think the Stones or the Beatles or the Beach Boys were true rivals or all that similar or coming from the same places at all. The Beach Boys output and influence just doesn't compare to the Stones and the Beatles, and if you had to pick, The Byrds were the real rivals to the Beatles, because they came with the whole package, unlike the Beach Boys. (meaning they came with the hits, the fashion, the drugs, the mystique, the troubles, the consistent artistic advancement, the aura).

Anyway, I think Brian Wilson's Rubber Soul connection to Pet Sounds is a bit overblown too; he was impressed by songs like Be My Baby and You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling and followed in the ways of Phil Spector much more than he ever did from the Beatles. He was already producing and arranging impressive things before Rubber Soul came out. And Pet Sounds is the ultimate culmination of his own Phil-Spector-influenced trajectory, and you're wrong about just how good this album is: quite simply very, very few albums that have ever been released are better than it is. That's my opinion and the opinion of a great many people (from the art-side to the business-side) through the years in the music industry.
