RE: RE: RE: RE: The Grammy's: boring, mediocre,

I see nothing wrong with only listening to the old stuff, or the stuff of your youth if that's what you like, but it is just not how I could ever live my life I guess. I love the old stuff just as much as you guys, by the way, and I am still finding new bands from the 60s that I like (and have recommended here) and that are "new to me" and that are perfectly enjoyable. But at the same time I have to be finding the new and latest things all the time as well, and there is good quality stuff all over the place! And a lot of it is being made the same way it was being made back in the day. Whether you want to call it "rock" or not is another matter but I don't really care about labels as long as the music is good and something I can click with.

Keno and manny, I'm not sure we need to compare lennon and jagger to new guys, and to ask why they are not as good. Or the women you mentioned either...But even if we want to, the stars of today are every bit as good as all those older stars, just in their own different ways. And really, we don't need the new Janis Joplin or whoever because Janis already DID Janis! Why try to do Janis again? You just can't.

I do not like Taylor Swift or Kanye West or Beyonce, or Lady Gaga not one little bit. Not in the slightest. I could even go so far as to say I hate them (their music). But they are just as talented and just as good as lennon and franklin and others. They really are. This is objectively true by any standard or measure you might care to apply. I will definitely draw the line on bieber, though, he is not talented and is a joke musically, (and as a person lol!)

Of the newer people I do like, they also are just as good as past stars, just in their own way. Again, not that there needs to be a comparison drawn, but Jack White is every bit the Lennon or Dylan in terms of quality and output and being a student of music. What he has done for the music industry and for vinyl and for authenticity in life ostensibly even goes beyond what those two did. I can't wait for his next solo record. Kacey Musgraves, Joan Shelley, First Aid Kit and Brandi Carlisle are brilliant country and folk musicians that are doing things that are the equal of the past stars, and in fact have been highly lauded by those very stars in recent years. Patti Smith, Loretta Lynn and Emmylou Harris are all big fans of those respective groups. The Swedish Collective called "Goat" and Tame Impala are a devastatingly good updates on psychedelic music and tribal beats and Jefferson Airplane-style freak-out jams while the latest stuff from Beach House and School of Seven Bells are every bit as good as the benchmarks for dreampop and shoegaze, (the titans otherwise known as the Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine.) Of course they are different, but to say that aren't talented or that the music isn't good is simply preposterous!!! And Dawes, Father John Misty, and Fleet Foxes and Beck have all recently come out with sharp acoustic based americana-like music that is beyond the scope of what CCR and The Band ever did. My musical roots and influences are the same as many of you here, and so by way of extension these are recommendations that I think many here would like. I hate rap and fake mainstream country and hip-hop more than most of you, but I can at least recognize that at least some of them are still talented.

Again, I'm not against liking what you like, and listening to it over and over again, but I'm also with 2k man: You've got to keep your mind open and your arms outstretched and embrace life and new music and new things all the time. Otherwise you'll just become "old" and stale...it takes a lot more effort the older you get but staying young at heart makes all the difference, so I'm told.
