OOOH/DW/SW/ENHM/Freaks/Woodstock/YS

Week 890 of the Stones poll is here, and as usual we will vote on 2 different Stones poll questions. For our first Stones poll, it’s the third week of the Crazy and Insane polls, featuring the Stones Out Of Our Heads LP. The new question will be this: Out Of Our Heads vs Dirty Work , which album do you like the best?

vs

So this week Out Of Our Heads goes up against Dirty Work. DW has been voted on the most in these Stones albums VS polls and this will be its 17th matchup, yet it still hasn't won a single round yet, the only album not to win at least once in this series. Now if you think I've been offering this album up as a sacrificial lamb in the 16 weeks it was voted on, well no, that isn’t the case at all. One could also argue that the album has been voted on so many times because I'm just trying to get it a win, and the more it's voted on, the more likely it has to win at least once. But no, that isn’t the reason either. The truth is, when I do each series, especially new ones, I like to spread out which albums we go with each week, as far as going by when the albums were released, and there's only so many Stones albums from the '80s, and I had decided to at first place OOOH up against Steel Wheels this week, until I realized that this week it's SW’s turn to host the second poll, so I didn't wish to run the same LP in both polls in the same week (although in time that will happen). Then Undercover was voted on just last week, and of the only other 2 '80s LPs, both of them were also more recently voted on (and I’ll still need to use one of them in the series anyway), while DW has only been voted on once in this entire year. So that's why it's DW turn again. The truth is, the deeper we get into these album polls, since they are running at least once a week now, it's going to be impossible to spread out the albums each week in the way I used to do. Not that this is a bad thing, it just means we are getting through that many more LPs, and that's a good thing!

The week's second Stones poll will ask this: Steel Wheels vs England's Newest Hit Makers, which album do you like the best?

vs

This week The Wheels of Steel Polls returns to the Stones album VS series, featuring the 1989 album Steel Wheels. This LP got absolutely great reviews when first released, which was a big deal, since most Stones albums, even in their glory days, didn't. "Mixed Emotions", which was written about the feelings the Glimmer Twins had for each other when the album was being made, along with "Rock in a Hard Place", are the 2 best tunes on here.

Looking at the standings for this Stones VS series, SW has a 2-6 record, so it isn’t doing too great so far, landing it in 18th place. When glancing at the standings for England's Newest Hit Makers, the Stones U.S. debut LP, it's hard to believe that it's just 4 spots from the very bottom of the standings, at only 1-6. But then if you look what LPs it's been up against, you can see why. ENHM has gone up against all of the Big 4, and lost to all of them, which would be expected, so that explains a lot of that poor record, plus it hasn't faced any of what us fans would call any of the Stones weaker albums, either. Now IMO, this week it will, although some fans would disagree with me on calling SW one of the weaker Stones albums. Anyway, this should be an interesting matchup.

To see the song list for each album, for Steel Wheels , go here: SW, and for England's Newest Hit Makers , go here: ENHM.

To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Looking back at last week’s first Stones poll we asked: Out Of Our Heads vs Sticky Fingers , which album do you like the best?.

vs

Out Of Our Heads didn’t really have a chance last week, not that any other Stones album before it did when going up against SF. To see the full, final results from this poll, go here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 889, poll 1. I’ll also add the results from this poll to the standings at the Stones VS Page 1, where at the top of the page you can check out the updated standings on how each album has done in these long running VS polls

Last week at the Stones VS poll, we asked:Undercover vs Goats Head Soup, which album do you like the best?

vs

Well, just like OOOH didn’t have a chance against SF, Undercover had no chance against GHS. You can see the final totals from this poll by clicking here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 889, poll 2. I’ll also add the results from this poll to the Stones VS Page 1 too, this is the same link noted above for the first poll.

At the Classic Rock Poll, we enter week 530, and as usual we’ll vote in 2 polls in this one too. The first question in the Rock Poll this week is: Which Classic Rock band was the freakiest looking?

With this being the week of the anniversary of the Woodstock festival, I figured this would be a cool...err... I mean, a groovy question to ask. Now by "freaky", I don't just mean "early 1960s hippy" (like the Beatles or Stones early '60s look), in fact I don't really mean hippy at all. But I do mean "hippie", since hippies started the freak moment, whereas hippys only looked like freaks to those of the WW2 generation, but they were never called freaks (just other nasty names by the WW2 generation). Now the term "freak" was never meant to be used as a bad name by the hippies, who called themselves that. But with all that said, the list we will vote on isn't just limited to hippie bands, not at all, but to bands whose members just all looked freaky.

Since so many of the older '60s bands that are still around today no longer look freaky anymore (like the Stones, other than maybe Keith), such bands will have the years noted next to them when they qualified for being or looking like freaks. Now there are plenty of other, non-Classic Rock bands that were also freaky looking (like many punk rockers, who I didn't list, other than I did list The Ramones, and the NY Dolls), so we will stick mainly to just the rock sub-genre that we normally cover here. Plus yes I know, some will question if Guns N' Roses should be listed, I say yes, they were one of the few new bands of the 1990s that played at least some Classic Rock music while looking like, and being, freaks, and although they are considered more of a hard rock band, well, KISS is looked at as more of a glam metal band, and I got them listed too (along with a few other metal bands), since even they played a bit of classic rock from time to time. The Ramones and NY Dolls are really the only bands listed that never played classic rock, but I felt I had to list them since they were 2 of the few punk bands who refused to cut their long, freaky hair after all of the other punk rockers did by the late '70s, plus the all-male Dolls, who were really more glam-punk than just punk, sometimes wore dresses, too. So both bands were the freakiest looking punk rockers out there, no question about it, and that's why I still listed them.

So which band listed do you feel had the freakiest look? Just click here to vote: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For this week’s Rock VS poll, the new question is: Woodstock 1 vs Woodstock Two, which LP covers the music from the 1969 festival, better?

vs

As noted above, this week marks the 47th anniversary of the Woodstock festival, and I wanted to ask a question about the festival, since I don’t think I ever did before for any of our polls, and this one makes for a great matchup. The festival, which of course ended up not being held in Woodstock, NY because of legal matters, was held in Bethel, NY instead. Although scheduled to run from August 15–17, 1969, because of delays, it ran over into August 18. Officially 400,000 people attended (there was believed to be more than that, closer to half a million), with another million people who tried to get there, but who got stuck on the main roads leading to the festival grounds, and never made it in, since the roads just couldn’t handle all of these people (well, all the cars on the road). So this festival was as much about the people (fans) who attended, as it was about the great performers who played the music. Over 5,000 people, who paid for tickets and couldn’t get there because of the traffic, were given refunds months later. Plus the promoters didn’t take a bath (money wise) once the festival became a free show, as we hear the MC say to the masses as the festival goes on. They ended up making a ton with the very popular movie release, and with the sales of these 2 albums.

I don't need to go into detail about who performed at Woodstock, since most of you know about them and what was more than likely the greatest rock concert ever held. These 2 main albums came from the performances, with "Woodstock 1" released in 1970, and Woodstock 2 released in the following year. BTW, the first album is officially titled Music from the Original Soundtrack and More: Woodstock, but most fans just call it "Woodstock",or "Woodstock 1". I believe one of only 2 albums ever retitled by fans, with the Beatles White Album being the other one. The reason why "and more" was added to the end of the official title, was because one song on the LP - that being the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's performance of "Sea of Madness", was actually recorded a month after the festival, during a live show at the old Fillmore East in New York City. Why that was put on this LP, well I don't know. Plus the other part of the official title is incorrect, since not all of the songs on this LP were heard in the movie soundtrack, either.

Woodstock 1 was released with six sides to it (and 21 tracks), first as 3 albums in one, than later re-released as a double LP. Woodstock 2 was released as a 2-LP set (today it's a double CD), with all 16 tracks coming from the festival. Both albums were big sellers. I'll also note that both LPs are excellent indeed!... In 1994 the songs from both albums, as well as numerous additional, previously-unreleased performances from the festival, were reissued by Atlantic Records as a 4-CD box set titled Woodstock: Three Days of Peace and Music. Then in 2009, Rhino Records issued a 6-CD box, Woodstock: 40 Years On: Back to Yasgur's Farm, which includes further musical performances. Since most rockers don't know these 2 other albums well enough, no need to include them in this poll.

Plus, as an extra note, and this is cool, so many today wonder what happened to and became of some of the different people who attended the festival and became somewhat famous because they were interviewed in the movie, etc. Really, it would be cool when the 50th anniversary comes around in 3 years, if maybe they can be tracked down and found, kind of like what was done for the 25th anniversary. But when I was searching for images to use for the album covers last week, I ran into some info about the couple shown on the album cover for the first issued Woodstock album. They are Bobbi Kelly and Nick Ercoline, and they are still together today (married in 1971), and in 2009, this photo (click here) was taken of them, covered in yet another blanket 40 years later!... As far as the kids shown on the cover of the second released album, that shot was taken from footage from the popular movie of the festival, but I have no clue what became of them. I do know that they were children from the hippie commune known as "the Hog Farm" (located then in Llano, New Mexico), run by Woodstock MC Wavy Gravy, and the same people who ran the free kitchen at Woodstock, and who helped to set up the site before the festival started. The Hog Farm is still an active commune today - the longest running hippie commune ever. But those toddlers on the cover have got to be about 50 years old today (that should make those of us around back then feel real old!).

If you would like to read more about either album before you vote, or just see the track list for each one, for Woodstock 1, go here: Woodstock 1 … for Woodstock Two, go here: Woodstock 2

To vote on this VS question, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll, we asked: Who was the most underrated member of Chicago's original lineup? .

Close voting in this one between most of the members of this long running band. The late Terry Kath was chosen the most underrated of the band, with 20% of the vote. You can check out the full, final results from this Rock poll by clicking here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 529. You can also check out the final results at the Top Ten Lists, Page, 11.

In last week’s Rock VS poll, we asked: ’Dedicated to the One I Love': the Shirelles' cover vs The Mamas and the Papas’s cover, which version is better?

Very close voting in this one all week long! But which cover was chosen in the end? To find out, go here, click here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 529. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We close out this poll post as usual with the Beatles poll, where it’s week 283, and this week’s new question is: What is your least favorite song on the Beatles LP Yellow Submarine

Yellow Submarine is of course looked at by Beatles fans in the same light that Stones fans look at Dirty Work... well, maybe not as bad as us fans look at DW, since side 1 of YS is excellent indeed, and actually featured Beatle songs along with rock music. The problem for many with this LP is of course, side 2.

Each week I note in this poll thread that we aren't looking for the worst Beatles songs on each album, since most Beatle fans feel that the Beatles didn't put out any bad songs, and yes, all of the Beatles songs on this album are also great or at least very good. Only problem is, again, side 2 of this album, where there aren't any Beatle songs, other than the closing track, and on all tracks on side 2, there isn't any rock music - at all, and no music played by the Beatles, either. It’s all music played by an orchestra, with the songs (again, other than the closing number) composed by producer George Martin, and coming from the film score of the cartoon movie Yellow Submarine. So if you don't dig classical music (well I do), you will pick one of the songs on side 2, but you might also have to give a listen to each one of them again, since my bet is many rock fans don't remember any of them well enough to recall which one they dislike the most (other than, and again, the closing track, which you more than likely remember). Yes, you can go to YouTube if you don't have the album and listen there, but you will need to search to find them all, and I believe 2 or 3 aren't there at all.

To see the songs from this LP, please use this link: Yellow Submarine. To vote in the poll, go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we answered this question: What is your least favorite song on the Beatles LP The White Album(aka The Beatles)?

Well, out of the 30 songs from this album, 2 songs took in 85.1% of the votes last week, the 2 being “Revolution 9” and “Long, Long, Long“, with another 10.2% voted for the third place choice, “Honey Pie“.

To check out the full, final results, go here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 282. Or, you can check out the results at the Beatles list page for "Songs per LP" , located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

Well, that takes care of this week's poll thread... In closing, summer is almost over, as the new school year starts up here tomorrow (or in about 9 hours). It's funny, being a retired man for the most part, the only way I get the weekdays right is when my grandson is in school Monday thru Thursday, but for the summer with him having no school, and him being home and not at school, I totally get my all of my days mixed up. So now with school back in session, I can get back to correctly knowing which weekday it is again. Although with the 3 day weekends they have here every weekend, I still get my Fridays and Saturdays mixed up quite often!

Thanks to all of you who take part in our weekly polls each week, and I hope all of you have a great upcoming week ahead.
