Never seen them but.... Roth couldn't sing live years ago when the band was at their prime, before Sammy came into the fold. I was told this by my friend who was on tour with them one year as their main photographer. This dude went on many such tours as different band's photographer, including the Stones, and he said being on tour touring with Van Halen, thanks to Roth, was the worst one he ever had to do. They had to have their sound man enhance Roth's voice for every live show they played on the tour and it still didn't sound good.
My own worst show was Bob Dylan, the second time I saw him, back in 1986 at Red Rocks. When you go to a show at that venue, you know it's gonna be good just because of where it's being held. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers opened the show for him and they were flat out great! They also played as Dylan's backing band when it was time for Dylan's set, but even they couldn't help. Dylan acted like he was god's gift to mankind on stage and like he had better things to do than put on a show that night. I should note that our seats were smack in the middle of the seating in the 5th row, and usually just being up close to a show with great seats in itself makes for a great concert, but nothing was gonna save this terrible performance that Dylan put on that day.
