RE: The Eternal 27-Year-Olds

This is very much like one of TM's old hypothetical questions. There really isn't any way to predict what woulda-coulda been because there are simply too many variables. People change as they age, as do their circumstances. But based on what we have, here is what I think:

1. Alan Wilson: I really don't know enough about him to even begin to guess how things would have evolved for him so I'll leave him out of this.

2. Jimi Hendrix: Great guitarists are always in fashion and in demand; he had a bright future ahead of him, whether as a solo act or as part of a band.

3. Janis Joplin: I think she would have lost her voice at some point because she was taxing her vocal cords too much. I don't think she would be singing today, and wouldn't have been for quite a while.

4. Brian: There was no supergroup which would have included both Brian and John Lennon in the making. That is a myth. I think that Brian needed a long break from all the madness. What would have happened to him after that would have depended on whether he would have been able to get cleaned up. If so, I can see him touring the blues scene for a few years with a group of like-minded bluesmen. Then, when Mick Taylor quit the Stones, I could have seen a more mature Brian rejoin a more mature Stones band.

5. Jim Morrison: Jim was a true oddball. He fancied himself a poet, not a rock star. He was uncomfortable in that role. At the time of his death, he had pretty much split from The Doors and said goodbye to the rock 'n roll life. He wanted to concentrate on his writing, both for himself and also to appease his GF, Pamela, who didn't like him being a rock star either. Maybe he would have had a change of heart at some point. I find it impossible to tell. Figures, since he was such a complex character.

6. Kurt Cobain: Yes, he influenced a whole generation. Or rather, one of his band's albums did. Nirvana goes down in history for "Nevermind", and only that album. The follow-up album wasn't nearly as good or influencial. Can you say what its title was, just like that, without looking it up? I don't think Nirvana had it in them to come up with a second "Nevermind". This assessment may seem harsh, but I think they were something of a one-album wonder.
