In the "battle of the mediocre albums" (aka this week's Stones poll), I went for BtoB for one reason and one reason alone: SOM, which I feel is the best song of their entire post-SG repertoire. The rest of the album is mostly forgettable but to me, SOM shines brightly and can stand up against most of the catalogue from their best years. That's how much I love the song.
I just had to go with Brian on NE in the first rock poll. His true swan song is, appropriately enough, beautiful and sad. And exquisitely played. But it was hard not to pick Skynyrd's "Mississippi Kid". I'm not usually a fan of Ed King (a very controversial character in Skynyrd history) but he does a magnificent job on this song which would have been my second pick.
"Monkey Man" in the second rock poll. That one was a no-brainer. The song is leading right now, but I thought it would be just killing the Kinks entry, which it isn't. I thought most Stones fans voted on Monday? Come on guys! Let's support MM!
"I Am the Walrus" in the Beatles poll. John Lennon at his irreverent best. No one else in the universe could have written those lyrics. "Taxman" would have been my second pick.
