Undercover/acoustic guitar/VS/Fab lyrics

Boy did I get this post up late! But week 810 of our Stones poll is upon us, and we also enter week 3 of the Undercover Polls, where we are placing this 1983 LP up against other Stones albums. So this week’s question is:

vs.

Undercover vs Bridges To Babylon , which album do you like the best? Bridges To Babylon was release in 1997 and is known as the Stones album with the most producers, which many fans felt was a mistake, yet others liked the fact that different people were having a hand in helping out the band in this matter.

One thing for sure, this battle should be a better match-up for Undercover to go up against, as neither album this week was ever that much loved by fans. Liked? Yes, both are, but not really loved a whole lot, either. So which one do you like more? To vote, just click on here: Stones Weekly Poll.

vs.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Undercover vs Tattoo You , which album do you like the best? . Undercover, in its second week of the Stones VS poll series named after it, once again didn’t do too well, this time going up against a put-together from leftovers Stones album .

To see the final results from this poll, just click on this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 809 . Plus you can also check out where the 2 albums are in the updated standings at the Stones VS List Page . BTW, I only noticed as I was putting this week’s poll together, that B2B was never listed in the standings, I just simply forgot to list it, so I have finally added it in, and sadly for B2B, it has the second worst record at 0-4 (DW is 0-13), well, maybe that will change this week?

Let’s now head over to the Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 452, and we’ll as usual, run the 2 polls per week. For the first poll, we are in the middle of voting on what is the longest multi-part poll question ever asked at our polls - looking for the best acoustic guitar(s) heard in a Rock song, which will run for 7 weeks/parts. I noted here last week how I lost Part 2’s entire poll, so week 3’s poll became the poll used in week 2. After a lot of backtracking in the last week, I’ve gotten most of the original Part 2 poll back together. It’s gonna run as Part 6 now, and every other part was moved up one week, and no, the new Part 6 is still missing about 6 songs, but by the time that week comes around, hopefully most of the original 28 lost choices will be listed.

So this week’s question is: What's the best acoustic guitar(s) heard in a Rock song? (Part 3 of 7) Gosh, if you thought the first 2 parts had some tough choices to choose from, just wait till you see this week’s choices! I and many other Stones fans have noted throughout the years that Brian Jones’ acoustic slide on “No Expectations” was one of the best acoustic slides in rock music ever, and it is, yet it may not be the best acoustic slide listed in this week’s choices! With that said, I’ll be passing on both of those choices and picking another acoustic guitar choice instead, although I never reveal my pick in this poll post, only later on in this thread.

Now a repeat from the first 2 weeks: This multi-part poll is being run in the usual way such polls are run, the top songs chosen from each of the first 6 parts will go up against each other in Part 7. How many songs taken from each part will depend on how the voting turns out, but I’m thinking the top 5 or 6 will make the cut as long as they get at least 5% of the vote each, so we shall see.

Remember, do not pick your favorite song from the list, we aren’t looking for that, we want what you think is the best acoustic guitar played only. To see Part 3’s list and vote in this week’s first Rock poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

In this week’s VS poll the question asks: 'Monkey Man' (original by The Rolling Stones) vs 'Apeman' (original by The Kinks), which song is best? In the last few weeks of this poll, we were looking at Beatle songs going up against covers by others, and in time we will do more of that as the Fabs are well loved, but this week and for perhaps the next 3, we’ll do the same with the Stones.

But first, a story… and if you aren’t in the mood to read a story and just want to vote, then just skip over this entire paragraph and head to the very next one…… About 4 years ago, I decided after seeing very nice poll totals whenever I ran any kind of a verses poll, to make it a regular part of the Rock polls and named these polls the “VS Polls”. I had 15 such future VS polls that I came up with even before I planned to run them as the second Rock poll of the week. So since they at first were just going to be normal rock polls - but they weren’t ever multiple part polls, in my future poll file (where I keep future polls), I had after each one of these future polls, a letter and number, (i.e., the second poll to be run would be “R2”, for “rock poll 2”). I did this to separate them from the other future Rock polls listed. Anyway, in time, more future VS polls were added to the list and finally, after about 30 VS polls were run (about 4 years ago), every one of the original 15 future VS I had listed (R1 thru R15) were used, except one, that being poll R12, which just so happens to be the poll I’m finally running this week…. Why didn’t I ever run this excellent question? Back around when I started the VS polls I felt whenever I would ask a Rock poll question which included the Stones against anybody else, the Stones would automatically win, since so many Stones fans voted even in the non-Stones polls. Today, although many of us Stones fans still vote, many non-Stones fans also now vote, making the polls much more even, even when a question involving the Stones is asked. In the case of this poll question, I just loved the Kinks song so much that I didn’t want to see it lose in a landslide to the Stones song, which I also love. So I never ran the question. But I think now it’s finally time to run it and see what happens.

'Monkey Man' was recorded and released by the Stones in 1969 on their Let it Bleed album. An upbeat and full of life song that was never released as a single, and for the most part, it’s a deep cut, yet it’s well known and loved by Stones fans. The lyrics were written by Mick and the music by both he and Keith. The song basically sates that we humans are all really, deep down, just monkeys, and the man in the song is a very horny one who wants to live with this hot monkey woman. Then again, some fans insist that the song was actually written about a person on heroin, i.e. a person with a monkey on his back. I don’t buy that myself, but then again, the Stones were writing a lot of drug songs around this time, too…. Keith shines on this number perhaps more than any other Stones song, and it’s one of the rare times that he plays slide guitar, as Brian’s role in the Stones was just about to come to an end and MT wasn’t yet on board. Bill also shines bright on this one too, besides playing his usual fine bass, he also plays the vibes on here, too.

“Apeman” was release by the Kinks in 1970, on their LP Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One. It was written by Ray Davies and was a major hit in the UK, peaking at #5 on the singles chart, and it was also a big hit in other countries too, but not in the US, where it only reached #45….. In this song, the narrator is stating that he wants to move into the jungle and get away from the city and its crazy people, and live among the animals and become an ape-man. Ray was forced to re-record the line "the air population is a-foggin up my eyes'" before the song was allowed to be released as a single in the UK, since most heard “a-fucking” instead of “a-foggin”. The song’s album version was never changed, and it does sound like he’s singing “a-fucking”, but Ray insisted he never sang that nor wrote the song using that word.

So which song about monkeys and apes do you dig more? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: What's the best acoustic guitar(s) heard in a Rock song? (Part 2 of 7) 10 songs received 5% or more of the vote, which is usually enough to move on to the final part, although that might be too many songs to list from one week for a 7 part poll, so chances are any picks with less than 6% may not show up in the final part. But here they all are anyway: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) - The Beatles - Acoustic Guitar by John Lennon (11.5%); Street Fighting Man - The Stones - Acoustic Guitars by Keith Richards ( 10.2%); Who’ll Stop The Rain - CCR - Acoustic Guitars by John Fogerty and Tom Fogerty (10%); My Sweet Lord - George Harrison – Acoustic Guitars: George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Peter Ham, Joey Molland, and Tom Evans (6.6%); Going to California - Led Zeppelin - Acoustic Guitar by Jimmy Page (6.1%); 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) - Simon And Grafunkel – Acoustic Guitar by Paul Simon (5.9%), Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard - Paul Simon - Acoustic Guitars by Paul Simon and David Spinozza (5.9%); Aqualung - Jethro Tull - Acoustic Guitar by Ian Anderson (5.5%), Dust In The Wind – Kansas - Acoustic Guitars by Kerry Livgren and Rich Williams (5.5%), Space Oddity - David Bowie - Acoustic Guitar by David Bowie (5.5%).

Last week in our VS poll we asked: 'Yesterday' (original by The Beatles) vs 'Yesterday' (cover by Ray Charles), which version of this song is best? Well Ray did well against the Beatles in this poll, and I noted last week that the Fabs rarely lose in these polls, but did Ray do well enough to beat the Fab 4? To see if that happened, just click on: Classic Rock VS Poll week 451. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We finish up with the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 205, and the question asks: Which Beatles song listed has the best lyrics? (Part 4 of 4) . The final week of this question is here! It’s sure been fun running this one, and we have 25 songs that made it into this final round. 15 of these 25 songs were written by John, only 6 written by Paul made it, and the other 4 were written by George.

To vote in this finial round of thisBeatles poll, just click on: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: Which Beatles song listed has the best lyrics? (Part 3 of 4) The ones with 5% or more were: Strawberry Fields Forever (22.3%); Taxman (12.6%); She's Leaving Home (11.6%); When I'm Sixty Four (6.1%); Yer Blues (6.1%); The Ballad of John And Yoko (5.7%), The Long And Winding Road (5.7%), While My Guitar Gently Weeps (5.7%); With A Little Help From My Friends (5.7%); Sexy Sadie (5.5%); Ticket To Ride (5.1%).

Well Monday is a US holiday, are you getting a day off from work? The holiday is called “President’s Day” in half of the US, but where I live and for the other half of the country it’s still called “Washington’s Birthday”. I prefer “Washington’s Birthday” myself, as way too many past US presidents were assholes, and we sure as shit don’t need to honor all of them. But I do hope all of you Gassers, regardless of where you live, have a great upcoming week. I myself will have to bare one more round of surgery on Wednesday, the third surgery for me since last June and second in 2 months, and I’m not looking forward to Wednesday at all, but hopefully this will be the last round of this. I’ll tell ya, growing old sucks, to say the least!
