LYL/Falsetto songs/Gett'g Stoned/Short Fabs

Well, with the New Year over with, it’s time to get back to asking more exciting questions in our domain’s weekly polls!

For week 804 at the Stones poll, this week’s new question will ask this: Rate the artwork for the front cover of Love You Live .

This cover had to go down as one of the most strange ever drawn up for the Stones. I mean, it makes Mick out to be a cannibal! But that don’t mean you don’t have to like it anyway, it’s only a drawing after all… so, do ya dig it? Let us know by voting in our poll here: Stones Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: What kind of year was 2014 for the Stones music? 3 of the 5 choices got 99.8% of the vote, with “The short tours went very well, it was a very good year!” taking in the most, with 39.8% of the vote.

Now to the Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 446, and we’ll return to running the usual 2 polls this week. For the first question we will ask: What is the best falsetto sung in a rock song? (Part 1 of 4) We have asked questions about men singing in falsetto before, but not this one, and there are so many such songs that we will only vote on some of the better known ones.

But let’s get something cleared up before we vote. It seems hard to believe that many people don’t know what “falsetto” means. I recall a thread here a good 10 years ago where this came up, and I’ve seen it discussed on other web board as to if a female can or cannot sing in falsetto. The answer is actually a simple one if you know what the word really means and where it comes from. That simple answer is that a female can never sing in falsetto, and there isn’t any other correct answer to this, even if some websites incorrectly list songs sung in falsetto by females. Only men can sing in this matter, when a female sings in this fashion, it’s called “soprano”. The word falsetto is Italian and means "false voice". It was first coined in churches in the 1500s to describe when men would sing a woman’s part of a song in an unnatural high pitched voice, to imitate a woman. Back in those days, woman weren’t allowed to sing in public in many cultures because of prejudices against women. Now you should not get “falsetto” mixed up with the word “tenor” either. When a man sings in tenor, that means he’s singing in his normal, high pitched voice. But as long as he raises his voice to an unnatural level, that’s when the word “falsetto” is applied.

Now what can be argued is if a person like Jon Anderson ever actually sings in falsetto, or is it his normal tenor voice that we are hearing. I believe in such a case, most of the time no, a person like Jon is singing in his normal range, but that doesn’t mean he can’t raise his voice and sing in falsetto sometimes too. I’ll be honest, with him and a few others, it’s very hard to tell the difference, so in the songs by them that will be listed, it’s questionable if the singer is using falsetto or not. Oh, and one last thing on this… now that I hope I made it clear that that a female can never sing in falsetto, nor can a preteen boy. There are actually several hit rock songs from the early ‘60s through the early ‘70s where preteen boys sang the lead and it sounds like they are singing falsetto. But it’s the same deal as with women, a boy’s high pre-adult voice is totally natural, so don’t except to see any Jackson 5 songs listed, only solo songs sung by Michael Jackson will be listed after he and his voice grew up. This also made it a hard choice to decide if the 2 hit songs sung by Frankie Lymon before he hit his teens should be listed or not, since he only 12 when he had his first hits, and his voice was very high. I decided to list them since it’s usually right around age 12 when a kid’s voice changes. With Lymon, it’s really hard to know just how deep his voice would have gotten once he aged, since he died at such a young age.

Now I know that some of you flat out hate when a man sings in falsetto, but since this is a 4 week poll, I do hope you’ll still vote in the poll each week, as there’s got to be at least one song listed each week that should sound good to you, I would think.

To cast your vote in this week’s first Rock poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

In this week’s VS poll we will ask: 'Let’s Go Get Stoned' (by Ray Charles) vs 'Let’s Go Get Stoned' (by Joe Cocker), which cover of this song is best?

Like so many other people out there, I’ve had Joe Cocker on my mind in the last few weeks, since his untimely death just before the holidays hit. Regardless if you dug his music or not (most did), he was a very kind and good person, and we hate to see such people leave us forever like that.

Of course, Ray Charles was the very same kind of man, and it also hurt when we lost him. They both took this cover song written by Nickolas Ashford, Valerie Simpson, and Josephine Armstead and first recorded by The Coasters in 1965 (along by many others after), to be as great as the song was ever sung. Ray’s version went to #1 on the R&B charts in 1966, and although Joe never released the song as a single, it was his many different live takes of the song where he made a hit out of it. His 2 best takes were at Woodstock in ’69, and then in the next year on the Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour. It was hard to decide which version to link to in the voting booth, so I decided to go with the rare studio take, since it’s the studio take we are using with Ray’s cover of the song. But you don’t have to judge either take when you vote, if you like the live versions better, just go by them.

To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Last week we only ran one poll because of the holiday, and that was the VS poll. In it we asked: '1999' (by Prince) vs 'New Year's Day' (by U2), which song about the New Year is best?

The final result were as close as it could have been without a tie, meaning one song won out by just a single vote. To see which song came out on top, click on: Classic Rock VS Poll week 445. You can also check out the final results at the new VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We rap up this poll post as usual with the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 199, and the new question is: Which Beatles song is too short? A few years back we asked for your favorite Beatles song under 2 minutes long, so please don’t get that question mixed up with this new one, since it’s different. That’s not to say for some the answer will be the same, but there are at least some songs where you might feel that a song that wasn’t a favorite of yours, just might have been if it wasn’t so damn short.

The thing with the early Beatles is, most of their early pop songs were very short since that’s how pop songs were made in the early to mid ‘60s, It was the Beatles who helped put an end to that by the mid to late ‘60s, but up till that time, they did play along with many short songs – and I’ll add, many of these songs sound great short! But there were a few, especially from the late ‘60s that were edited down from their long version and made short, so that is something to think about and consider before you vote.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: Which Beatles song with 'love' in its title is your favorite? For a holiday poll, this one did very well. I was once again surprised by the top pick, which is always cool, and that pick was “You've Got to Hide Your Love Away’ taking in 13.1% of the vote.

I thank all of you who take part in the voting here each week in our polls, especially thanks to everybody who took part in the last 2 weeks of voting with the 2 major holidays that we just had. Cheers!
