RE: RE: RE: Got cold quick! NSC

This snow on the ground map shows just what manny is talking about: snow on the ground for Buffalo, NY. Just click on "Total snow depth" where you see "map type", then "get map", then click on where NY state is located on the US map, and when you get to the new page, then click where Buffalo is (Erie county) and you will see what he means!

Don't you just love how one place can get a lot of snow or the cold, yet another place close by will totally miss it? That's what happened here about a week ago when this cold wave first hit. Where I live, we have 3 14,000 foot mountain peaks and another 2 13,000+ peaks directly to our east, and whenever a cold front comes in directly from the northeast, like this front did, the cold air gets trapped on the eastern side of the mountains and takes about a day to reach our side, as it slowly filters in by heading down the mountains passes. So on that first day the cold hit, it was -5 degrees F 12 miles east of here in the closest town to us (as the crow flies), but a warm +20 degrees here! Now that the cold air finally got here and left the east side of the mountains, it's 10 degrees here tonight while at the same time it's 26 degrees over there. We had the same deal yesterday, just a bit colder. But it's stuff like this as to why I always loved the weather, studied meteorology, and became an official weather observer.... Looking at the clock, it's time for me to get the new morning forecast up online for my town, then go to bed. Some might think that weatherman get up real early to set the morning forecast, but the truth is, it's the ones like me who stay up all nite that set that forecast, although my nocturnal habits have nothing to do with being the local weather guy, I've always been a nightowl.
