Jump Back/Song's opening/SFTD/Lennon on leadguitar

It’s time for week 796 of our Stones poll with the third week of the latest series of questions where we rate the artwork for each of the Stones albums. This week we ask:Rate the artwork for the front cover of Jump Back (UK cover) . Jump Back is, or should I say, was the last of the many Stones albums to have a different cover for its US and UK releases, and this week we look at the UK cover. The UK album artwork was designed by Maurice Jones and this was the sixth official compilation album put out by The Stones. It was released in 1993 in pretty much everywhere in the world except in North America. The North American release would not see the light of day until August of 2004. This greatest hits album only covered songs from 1971 to 89.

I’m not sure exactly what Jones was trying to capture with this cover using the old beat-up shoes that he photographed, other than to get a throwback feel for the ‘70s perhaps? But whatever he was getting at, how much do you like it? Let us know by voting in this poll: Stones Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Rate the artwork for the front cover of Still Life . Well with this poll’s question we had one interesting debate here in Gasland as to exactly what the drawing on the cover of this LP was, and to many of us fans, we never realized that pink thing in the middle was supposed to be the stage and well, if nothing else many of us learned that and perhaps a new appreciation for the drawing, if not the album cover. Overall most fans didn’t totally get or at least like the cover, and one of the lowest top ratings ever in this series of questions was seen in the final results. The top rating was only a “5”, gathering 13.5% of the votes. But the most interesting thing with the final vote was almost all of the possible 11 choices got a lot of votes other than “zero” “1” and “10”. Every other choice scored well, making this poll one of the most spread out votes for this design question that we’ve ever seen.

You can click on this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 795 for the full, final poll results. Plus you can also check out to see just where on the overall album list this 5 rating shows up among all of the other 42 album covers that we have rated so far in this series. You can do that at the Stones Fans Picks Page 2, just head down the page about a third of the way when you get there, and you’re see the list.

Now let’s look at this week’s Classic Rock Poll, where it’s week 438 of this poll and we’ll be running the usual 2 poll questions for the week. The first question asks: What rock song has the best opening to it? (Part 5 of 6) 34 new songs go up against each other this week and like in the first 4 weeks, only the top 5 will live on to see Part 6, which will take place a week from today.

But for now it’s week 5 that matters most, which song will you pick this week? To see the new list and vote, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

At the VS Rock poll this week we will ask this:'Sympathy For The Devil' (cover by Guns N' Roses) vs 'Sympathy For The Devil'(cover by Ozzy Osbourne), which version is better? This is the Stones song that many of us fans feel is their best ever, so no need to put their original take up against any cover of it since we would already know what the outcome would be before any votes were even cast. Instead, I’ll just pit what are my 2 favorite covers of the song up against each other and see what we end up with.

Guns N' Roses recorded their cover in 1994 and once released it reached #55 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. But there was by this time all kinds of trouble in the band, and lead guitarist Slash described the recording of this song as "the sound of Guns N' Roses breaking up" as he wasn’t please as to how Axl Rose edited the song’s guitar parts without letting him know. Ozzy Osbourne didn’t record his version of this song until 2005 on his all cover album titled Under Cover, but he had been playing the song live on occasion for many years beforehand.

I had planned to run this question several weeks ago but there was no video of Ozzy’s studio cover anywhere online to be found and I didn’t feel enough of you might know his version to run it without a link so you could hear it first, so I just never ran the question. Then by accident late Friday night when I was looking to see how many live videos of the Stones take of SFTD were up at YouTube for the song, I saw that the Stones 1968 TV visit of them performing the song on David Frost was finally up on there after so many years of it not being (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3uTLHEGm-M), but after it played, I saw a brand new link to Ozzy’s studio cover the song, which is now also in a box set I guess, but this video only came online the day before. Since I didn’t have anything for sure set up for this week’s new VS poll, I decided to run that old question this week.

So which heavy metal cover of this Stones song will you chose? If you never heard any of these covers, do check them out as both are very good indeed! Then to cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: What rock song has the best opening to it? (Part 4 of 6) For the second week in a row we ended up with a 4 way tie for 5th place in the voting, so 8 songs make their way into Part 6 from Part 4 of this question, the songs are: Jumpin' Jack Flash – Stones (8.8%); A Hard Day's Night – Beatles (8%); Hot For Teacher - Van Halen (7.6%); Highway To Hell - AC/DC (6.8%), Billion Dollar Babies - Alice Cooper (6.6%), Come Together - The Beatles (6.6%), Oh Well - Fleetwood Mac (6.6%), and Stairway To Heaven - Led Zep (6.6%).

In last week’s VS poll we asked this question : '25 or 6 to 4' vs 'Does Anybody Know What Time It Is', which Chicago song about time is better? To find out which song by Chicago ended up on top, click on: Classic Rock VS Poll week 437. You can also check out the final results at the new VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We rap up this week’s poll thread at the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 191, and the brand new question this week is: Of the Beatles songs to feature John Lennon on lead guitar, which one is best? . As many of us realized and perhaps many other Beatle fans didn’t, John played lead guitar for the Fabs on several songs; the total is actually 31 songs, although on 13 of them he shared the lead with either George or Paul. But on which one did he play his best in making that song the best of the bunch?

To vote for the song you feel John played his lead best on, just click on: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: What is your least favorite song on the Beatles LP Help! ? I learned last week that one of the songs that I always liked a lot, in fact a song I rate a 10, “Act Naturally”, isn’t as well liked by most of my fellow Fab fans, as it picked up 21.1% of all the votes and landed in first place. Well it’s still a great country song to me regardless, but maybe because it’s not a rock song is why so many don't like it as much as I do, as I do like country music a lot.

To see the full results for this poll, click on: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 190. The top results from this poll will also show up on this page: Favorite/Least Favorite Beatle Songs per LP .

Thanks to all of you who vote each week in all of our weekly polls!
