RE: My picks

Stones poll: I only gave it a "2" since to me this is one poor cover. Why shoes??

Rock poll: Whenever I vote in a multi part poll like this one, I will not always vote for my favorite song until the final part comes around, especially if it's a Stones song, since I know it will more than likely be in the final part anyway. It seems in the last 2 years that's now also the case for any Beatle songs listed in our multiple part polls, so although any of the 3 songs by these bands I could vote for in part 5, I'll just skip over them and vote for another which I also hope might be in the final tally (even if many times the song I vote for doesn't make it anyway). With that noted, I chose between Lennon's 'Cold Turkey' (solo Beatle songs are not Beatle songs), 'Wild Thing' by The Troggs, and 'All the Way from Memphis' by Mott the Hoople. I ended up going with Ian Hunter's wild piano opening on 'All the Way from Memphis' in the end.

VS poll: I love this question because this is one song that's hard to cover the way given the Stones original was made, that one is just so great and hard to match, but I did list my 2 favorite cover takes of this song for the poll. Ozzy's version is excellent, not bad at all for a solo effort! But I had to go with Guns and Roses' version which is as excellent as it gets, especially after it starts rolling a bit. I mean, they totally hit a home run on this song and made it sound different - yet not too different from the Stones version. Very far out indeed and I have no clue why Slash hated the edit, you mean he actually played a better guitar take than what we hear on the official release?

Beatles poll: I wrote about Lennon's acid guitar above in this thread, and I just love how it opens up the fast version of "Revolution". But in this poll we are going for the best lead played overall, and his lead, non acid guitar playing on "Get Back" sounds better to my ears. Just wonderful clean picking by John on that one. To think George was suppose to play the lead on this song, but it was recorded the day after George walked out and wasn't around, so Paul asked John to play it instead and IMO, it turned into John's best lead guitar playing ever! I'm glad George returned the day after this was recorded, but i'm glad John got to play the lead instead, his guitar playing always had more energy to it than George's very mellow playing, and this song needed that energy, Lennon's guitar makes the song great!
