Black Label's a fine blend. JW Gold is great, but IMO you can get better bottles for that money. You live in New York right? Should be one or two nice stores where you can check stuff out. Decent whisky sellers will give you a sip if you have trouble making your choice.
It comes down to this: JW (all blends) are fine. You can't go wrong if you want to pour a friend a glass and you pick Black Label (even Red's fine) Thing is: they're kinda middle of the road IMO. Once you pay loads of money for a bottle I'd go for a good Dimple (if it has to be a blend), or Chivas Regal..
I'm more of a single malt guy. Two of my favorites that are more or less widely distributed are the 10 year old Laphroaig and 14 year old Stratislah from the Chivas Brothers. The first is - as I noted in my post to iFox below - salty and smokey, the second has more of a 'herby' feel to it (if herby is actually a word). Could be you dislike both, but there are plenty of other picks. If you have a taste for it, you'll end up with 8 to 10 different bottles eventually..you can pick the taste that comes best with the mood. Always have that bottle of good standard juice (Johnny Walker, Glenfiddich) around though. Not everyone likes the different shit.
