Poll Post for the week starting Monday, Dec 28

Well, we are now in our last 4 days of 2020, and it’s time for me now to write up the very last Poll Post of the year for our 4 weekly polls. We’ll start off talking about the Stones poll, which enters week 1,117. We continue to rate songs this week and well, I also wanted a true party song for this week with the New Year being here come Friday, and so we'll go with one that will cover what so many do on New Year's Eve, that's going out and partying at a Night Club, or at a "Go Go" if you will (okay, some of us think "Disco" when we hear "Go-Go", but still, it's going out, even if for many of us, well, we'd say 'yuck to that!'), but this poll question does reflect what some do on New Year Eve anyway, so I say it still fits the bill!... So, here is this week’s question: Rate the Rolling Stones release of the song “Going To A Go-Go”, from the Still Lifealbum, from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest).

Stones’ song “Going to a Go-Go” , from the Still Life live album

Now an important note, we are rating the OK live take of the song from the 1981 Still Life LP and not the crappy live take that comes from their official video of the song. Yeah, I rather show a live video to go with our polls, but then again, we aren't rating Stones videos here anyway (and when we do, we'll rate that other crappy live version of the song at that time, since it is the official vid). But I guess they didn't have any live footage of the ‘81 Still Life recording made at the Hampton Coliseum, and that's why they went with that other subpar take of the song. I mean really, I'd rate that version around a 5 when the time comes (in the next video polling round), whereas, while I may not be crazy about this song even with its SL take (which was released as a single and hit the Top 30), but at least the music that night was tops (but then again, knowing the Stones, it more than likely was studio enhanced later on by Mick), and Mick's singing was a lot better than what we see and hear on the official video release.

The lineup up on stage for this song was: Mick Jagger – lead vocals; Keith Richards – guitar; Ronnie Wood – guitar; Bill Wyman – bass guitar; Charlie Watts – drums; Ian McLagan – keyboards; Ian Stewart – piano; and Ernie Watts – saxophone (this was back when MJ was still mad at Bobby Keys and still won't allow him to play live with the band [a very long 7 year bitch held by Jagger, after Bobby filled a bathtub while on tour with Dom Perignon champagne and billed the band] but it would be the last tour that would hold true for [note: Bobby was allowed to play live for 4 shows on "Brown Sugar" for the tour, thanks to his best friend Keith talking to MJ about it]. After this tour, Bobby came back into the fold and didn't miss another Stones tour up until his death).

Okay, one last thing, remember, we are not rating the video to this song, only the song gets rated here, and as I always point out, the video link is only on the voting page so that you can hear the song before you vote.

To cast your vote, just click on the following link: Stones Weekly Poll.

Last week at the Stones poll we answered this question: Rate the Rolling Stones release of the song “Saint of Me", from the Bridges To Babylon album, from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest).

Saint Mick, from the Stones’ song “Saint of Me”, from the Bridges To Babylon album

“Saint of Me” did very well in the voting, seeing a “10.0” for its top rating, with 21.2% of the vote. To see the full results from this poll, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 1,116. Or, to see the results to this poll at the Stones List Page, just visit this page: Stones Top Picks, List Page 2, the result will be at the very bottom of the page under “Miscellaneous Stones’ Lists”…. And… Nope, I still haven’t gotten the new standings to show on the page yet (as I just flat out keep forgetting to do it), so for now the results are found on the bottom of the page for the time being.

Okay, now let’s look at this week’s Classic Rock Poll, where we enter week 757 of voting, and for this one, as usual, we vote in 2 different Rock Polls each week.

This week we enter the second week of asking a 3-part question about happiness and joy, that reads like this: What's the Best song about Joy and/or Happiness? (Part 2 of 3)

Week 2 of looking at happy songs about joy!

Yep, this is the second round asking this one and so far I would say it is a very happy and joyful poll question to ask. For Part 2 we will once again have 62 songs that we will choose from.

You will again notice that for the most part, most of the songs listed that we choose from, are not love songs (only a few are), but just songs about being happy or full of joy.

To vote in Part 2 of this question, just click on here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For our second Rock Poll of the week, we have the Rock Video poll, and this week’s question will ask: Rate Prince's official video for “1999” (Click here for the video)

“1999”, by Prince

Once again, like last week, I wanted another happy video to rate this week, one that would be on fire and full of life, since the new year needs to come on in this week with as much happiness, joy and positive energy as we can give it. But just knowing that 2020 will be over and done with is enough alone to be a very happy thing for most people, I would say.

So I feel I picked an excellent New Year’s song for this week, and one for sure that rocks….. We rarely ever get into funk music here at the polls, but this Prince funk-rock song is still a great New Year’s Eve song IMO (even if 1999 was a long time ago, as was 1982, back when Prince wrote and first released the song), and while several years back I asked a VS question about this number, we've never rated the video before, either, and that’s what we will do for this week.

There was no other musician like Prince, he was a one-of-a-kind guy if any guy ever was! But not only was he a different and a unusual person, even his songs did things unusual and different, as this one after its July of 1982 release peaked at #44 on the Billboard Hot 100, Prince rereleased it in the U.S. in December of ‘82 and this time the rerelease peaked at #12 in the States, while a third rerelease in January 1985 in the UK only, peaked at #2 on the UK’s main music chart. But there was more to come with this number… Following Prince's death, the song re-charted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #41, and later peaking at #27, making it the fourth separate time the song had entered the Hot 100 and the third different decade in which the song re-charted (as after its two 1980s entries, it made the chart yet again on January 16, 1999 at #40).

So yes, just like the man who wrote it, this song was unusual, and unlike any other song before it or even after it. Prince on this tune shares lead vocals with members of his backing band, the Revolution, namely Dez Dickerson, Lisa Coleman and Jill Jones.

The music video was directed by Bruce Gowers, and was shot during the last week of rehearsals for the 1999 Tour. It paints a picture of Prince and his band playing during a live performance.

To watch and listen to, and then rate this week’s Rock video, just click on this link: Classic Rock Video Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Last week in the first Rock Poll we asked this question What's the Best song about Joy and/or Happiness? (Part 1 of 3)

Last week, we looked at Part1 of happy songs about joy!

Well as of Saturday night, it was looking like we might have 15 to 17 songs qualify for Part 3 of this question since we had a major tie going for the last slot between 7 songs, and with another 2 tunes only a vote behind them. But early Sunday morning things slowly started to change and by Sunday nite we actually had an almost true Top 10 list to go by (I say “almost”, since 6 songs tied for the last slot to make it into the final round… still, that’s better than …say… 16 tying!). The top 10 songs are: Jumpin' Jack Flash – The Stones (at 4.9%), Do You Believe In Magic? - Lovin' Spoonful – tiued with Happy Together - The Turtles (both at 4.8%), Joy to the World - Three Dog Night (with 4.6%), and then the 6-way tie for the final slot was: Blue, Red, And Grey - The Who, Don't Stop - Fleetwood Mac, Good Day Sunshine - The Beatles, Groovin' - The Young Rascals, Mr. Blue Sky - Electric Light Orchestra, and The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) - Simon & Garfunkel (all 6 took in 4.5%).

To see the full, final results from this poll and see where the rest of the other listed songs ended up in the voting, just click on the following link: Classic Rock Poll, week 756, Poll 1.

Last week at our Rock Video poll, we asked this: Rate Quiet Riot's official video for their cover of “Cum On Feel The Noize”

'Cum On Feel The Noize , cover by Quiet Riot

Yes, this one was on fire for sure, well, its music was, but no, it wasn’t on fire as far as its rating went, seeing one of the lower ratings for the video polls (but still, not anywhere close to the lowest ratings ever, too). Its final top rating was just a “8”. No, that doesn’t really sound so bad, but our video polls almost always sees 10s, or 9s at the lowest. The lowest Rock Video ratings (not counting Stones Videos) are 2 ratings of “7s” – but if we count the Stones, well, and holey shit to this, but not only does the Stones have the lowest video rating ever at only a “3” (can you guess which one?… here’s a clue for you all… there’s a real crazy looking dude, a boy, and a roller coaster in it)….. but then, all together, the Stones have the 6 worst and lowest rated videos ever voted on here of a “6” or lower. But in all fairness, the Stones have had more videos rated over any other band and only the Beatles comes close to them, and the Stones by far have more 10 ratings than any other band/artist at 38 (with a total of 73 videos rated overall)! But in fairness to the Beatles, they have 23 10s out of 26 videos rated (the other 3 were 2 “9s” and one “8”).

You can click on the following link to see the final results from this poll: Classic Rock Poll, week 756, Video Poll. Or, to see just how low in the updated Video standings this one lands, just go here: Rock Video Standings list page. The standings can be found at the very top of the page.

Time to finish up this week’s Poll Post with the Beatles Poll. This week’s question for poll week 508, asks this: Rate The Beatles' Video for “I Feel Fine” (Click here for the video)

“I Feel Fine” video

So, even this week’s Beatle’s video has a New Year’s connection to it. Don’t ask me why this is so, but the Beatles play their guitars surrounded by exercise equipment (and the most often made New Year’s resolution made by most people is to lose weight by working out in a gym), other than Ringo, who doesn’t play his drums at all and instead rides a stationary bike! Why? Who knows, other than the Fabs didn’t have any say when they made promo films early on (this film was made in 1964, so it was a very early film, indeed).

For the song itself, John not only wrote the song and sings the lead vocals, but he also plays the lead guitar on this one, too, while George plays the rhythm guitar and sings the backing vocals along with Paul who of course also plays bass on the tune (*note - the morons over at Wiki got this info all wrong [what else is new?], as they credit George as the lead guitar player. That’s not even close and 100% wrong, hell, just look at the video, it’s all John playing the lead on here.. But yes, sometimes George did play lead on the song - when they played it live). Ringo again – in this video, doesn’t play anything (but on the record, he was the drummer). "I Feel Fine" also marks the first use of feedback deliberately as a recording effect in Rock music on a vinyl record. Both Paul and John were responsible for this, with Paul using his bass and John an acoustic-electric guitar to get the feedback sound you can clearly hear.

As far as charting went, well this was the Beatles as they were starting to peak (and their peak pretty much only ended when they broke up in 1970). As a single, IFF reached the very top of the British charts on 12 December 1964, displacing of all songs and bands, the Rolling Stones and their cover of "Little Red Rooster", and IFF would remained at #1 for five weeks. In Canada, the song also reached number one. And in the U.S., it topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three weeks in late 1964 and early 1965 (for the record, it reached #1in seven other countries!).

As the video that we will rate goes…. Two different promotional films directed by Joe McGrath were filmed on 23 November 1965. Again, both feature various bits of gym equipment. In the first (the one we will rate), George sang into a punch-ball while Ringo pedals on the exercise bike. The second marked a lunch break the Beatles had and that was filmed, where they all ate fish and chips while trying to mime to the song. Brian Epstein was adamant that this film would not be used. From then on, the controversial "fish and chips" footage was kept in a videotape box labelled "I Feel Fried". The first promotional film was included in the Beatles' 2015 video compilation 1, and both films were included in the three-disc versions of the compilation, titled 1+. While I do recall seeing this version 2 once or twice - many years ago, I haven’t seen it in years and it isn’t anywhere to be found on the web. If it was, we would be voting in another Beatles video VS poll this week (like we did last week) instead.

To vote in this week’s Beatles video poll, just click on this following link: Beatles Weekly Poll. Links to the 2 videos are to be found at this same voting page.

Looking back at last week’s Beatles poll, we voted on this question: “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” by John Lennon & the Plastic Ono Band. The unrestricted video vs the restricted video. Which video is better?

“Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” From the unrestricted video version

So last week’s Beatle poll was instead a Lennon Poll (I hadn’t run a Lennon poll instead of a Beatles poll in several years) Anyway, in as close voting as we could have seen, the restricted and depressing video for “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”, beat out the unrestricted video by a single vote. To see this poll’s full results, just go here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 507. I haven’t yet decided on which list page to place these results yet, but after I decide, I’ll note it here later on which page that is.

So that will do it for the very last Poll Post of the year. Yes, with last week being Xmas week, we did see the usual drop off in total votes for our polls, but overall, the polls did well vote wise anyway. Votes should be on the slow side for this upcoming week too, with the week for the most part being a week off from work for most people, and so many of you vote at work as it is.

I do hope everybody has a very good and happy New Year’s Eve and Day. I guess most people this time around will not party with others on NYE, that is, if most people are smart. I am smart in that regard, but I also know that doing every day chores can get you sick with COVID, too, as my son-in-law now has it bad and he and my daughter weren’t going anywhere, other than to the store to buy food. That was the only place he had been, and now he’s infected. But I rather not end this post on a sour note, so instead, I’ll just say, please be safe and take care so you can be around for all of 2021, when hopefully we will be free of this damn virus, and we can all start living in happy times again!
