Rock 'n Roll Hall Poll Report

Once a year, and almost always around this time, I like to make a special post about all of the On Going Polls that we have on the domain, to update where they are at (there's 17 of them total). I don't have the time right now to do that here (I'll try to add it in a reply to this post in a few hours if things work out later on today for me) except to for now, I'll just talk about the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame Poll, since tomorrow the new 7 inductees go in - and with that in mind, I just added them into the On-Going poll question.

Considering how bad some of the new Hall picks have been in the last few years, this year's picks aren't as bad, although there's one or 2 that I know little of myself. The Zombies are the best pick of the 7 to get, IMO. Then it's very cool to see Def Leppard get in too (even if I know my buddy Rick [Maxie to most of you] hates that pick!). But getting to party with those guys and getting to know them a bit, well that alone makes be feel happy for them, as they were really good kids back when me and my family got to hang out with them, back when they were really just young kids and at an average age of just 20 (and heck, me and my wife weren't really that much older than they were then, yeah, we all were very young back then!). But now I can say that I've gotten to know and hang out with some Hall of Fame members again, as I also got to hang out with more than once (and actually work with) Jackson Browne in Telluride, about a year after meeting the Def kids on the Colorado Front Range (both stories are in the Gasland archives).

But anyway, getting back to the Rock Hall poll, besides adding in the 7 new comers to that poll, just a bit to report as far as new stuff goes. The poll, which was the last On-Going Poll started at the domain back in December of 2009, so it's 11 years behind the rest of these On Going polls, now has over 12,500 votes cast in it. The poll question of course asks: "Of the Artists in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, who should not be in there?". The Top 10 picks have changed a bit. You may recall last year me noting that KISS was knocked out of the Top 10 and this year they go from #11 to 13, while the The Sex Pistols and Parliament-Funkadelic are now also no long in that Top 10 either anymore, as they take over the #11 and 12 spots. So who's new in the Top Ten? 2Pac, who was only added on to the list (and to the Hall) 2 years ago, is now at #10, and 6 of the Top 10 spots are filled up by rappers.

N.W.A. - added to the poll and Hall in 2016, and for the second year in a row - saw the most votes cast in the last year and move up to the #6 spot, right behind Public Enemy (added in 2013), who saw the second most votes in the last year. Blondie, who held on to third place for the last few years - after being in the number 2 spot before that, drops down to #4 this year and no longer sees as many votes as they did in the past (but for non-rappers, they still see a bunch). So new in the Top 3, at #3 is the Beastie Boys (added in 2012) who to this day still see a ton of new votes each year and now pass up Blondie. Then at #2 is Run-D.M.C, who also still see a lot of votes!

Still at #1 on the list - and I got a feeling this might not change for a long time - even if their lead did fall over 1% in the last year as the top vote getter in the poll - but still a full 2% ahead of Run-D.M.C, is ABBA!.. I may not be and never been a fan of theirs, but I totally disagree with this pick. Just because they aren't my cup of tea and they never been big or even liked at all in the U.S., they are loved most everywhere else on the planet, and they have sold a ton of records worldwide. Now I get the main argument against them, they aren't rock and are only pop. But IMO, they still sing Pop-Rock songs and if I can accept one of the worst playing rock bands ever to be in the Hall, that being KISS (again, IMO) - well I feel ABBA should be in the Hall too, and for the same reason KISS should be in. Both got in because of their fans, they both got tons of fans who love them, so the same deal applies to ABBA as to KISS.

I still got a feeling that one day one of these rappers will over take ABBA for first place, too, but it's gonna be a while, and I see them in the Top 5 forever, thanks to how many can't stand them in the old ol' US of A. But KISS was always in the Top 10 too - yet today no longer are, and my guess is that they never again will be. So if that can happen, and the rappers still get most of the votes year in and year out - well, one day ABBA will no longer lead the pack of unloved members in the Hall of Fame... I think!

To check out the Rock Hall Poll - and vote in it if you haven't in the last year (you can vote in it once a year), just go here: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Poll.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... If you never been to the Hall before - and if you love Rock Music - regardless if you disagree with some or many of the Halls' picks, it is a great place to visit. It's been many years since I've been there myself (around 2002 I think), and it was the last fun trip I had with my late wife, as we went there just before she got sick. But believe me, if you like Rock music - you got to check the joint out! Heck, I already did and yet it's still on my bucket list anyway, as I want to visit it one last time before my time is up!

BTW, I usually - the week that the new inductees get in, like to run a weekly Rock poll question - asking which artists not in the Hall yet - should be in the Hall today. But since we're in the middle of a 4 part Rock poll at the moment, that Rock Hall question will be asked for 2019 in 2 weeks time, after the current question finishes up.
