I agree with the need for gun control Keno e.g. why does anyone need to own a handgun? Handguns are, by and large, only produced for one reason i.e. to shoot people. I can see the argument for owning one in a country that is awash with them i.e. to protect yourself from someone who might use one against you. That is a vicious circle. At the extreme it seems to be the same vicious circle that seeks to have teachers (and god knows who else) armed in schools.
I understand that politicians (I would think from both of the main parties) are reluctant to take on vested interests in any meaningful way, and you are right, if they can't move down the road of change after the killing of primary school children, then they are never going to move. In light of that, I think the impetus for change has to come from the ground, the U.S. electorate has to change it's whole attitude to the private ownership of guns. Until that happens their will be no meaningful change, and Americans will go on killing one another on an industrial scale.
Just on the point of mass murderers and mental health, it seems to me that everyone is sane, until they are not. I don't know, but how many of the perpetrators of mass shootings have been pronounced 'criminally insane', and been committed to an institution for the criminally insane, as opposed to being locked up in mainstream prisons?
