Keno, I hope that you are right and that I am wrong. I do believe that the process of reducing these shootings will at best be a slow one. And I do feel that a multi-pronged approach is the only way. It won't happen with just one change in law or policy, though these things could still be very helpful.
Reducing and limiting the sale of guns, and limiting the sale of guns to people who should not have them is a very hard thing and requires a lot of changes. But it can happen. We should be hopeful and positive, but also realistic and know it will take a while and it won't happen with just a few strokes of a pen. But strokes of pen do put things into motion.
I'm in Canada. There is gun violence here and there have been mass shootings but they are far less than the USA.
But it is true that the USA is much more peaceful than ever before, and that the rates or violence and homicide have slowly and steadily declined over the last 60 years or so. In just a little research will reveal this. However, its hard to reconcile these statistical facts with what we see in the 24-hour news cycle and in other media. Watching a lot of American news can make us think that American life is more violent and scary than ever, but this is not the case. That said, I know there are pockets of American life where there would doubtlessly be more violence seen, such as in poor neighborhoods of large cities. But the big picture shows a huge decrease in crime.
