Yeah, some things are well controlled, especially if they are topics that are controversial or much talked about. If you write something that is backed up by well publicized info, you can usually get away without citing.
Opinions are also frowned upon, as its supposed to function primarily as academic source material.
Small facts, like saying this or that Stones song is reggae influenced, can go un-cited.
Many academics really don't like Wikipedia. I take the view that its very valuable as long as you don't rely solely on it. You need to corroborate what you get there with other sources. The fact that ANYONE can edit it makes it the best and worst thing for research.
