Yeah, many didn't realize it, but if you look at the lyrics and who Jagger brings up in the song, if you know religion teachings, well all of them were converts to Christianity. John the Baptist and Saint Paul were both born Jews, Augustin was raised a Pagan, and of course, they all were what Christians would call such people, "sinners", until they saw what I, a former Xian would call it, the false light of Christ. I guess they were blinded by that light. Funny how the opposite happen to me in life, yet I have studied all of the major religions out there and Christianity would come in second to last in my beliefs as to how anybody can believe in any of what these major religions out there teach. While I can understand how and why most believe in a God, I can't understand why anyone would fall for these phony religious leaders we have - especially today's preachers. So you say "Drink the poison kool aid and we all can take a spaceship up to heaven right away and live a better life up there today". Oh, ok!
Poor Billy had major problems in his life, being molested as a child for years and then doing the same thing to others when he was a man. Yet while he did all those drugs and raped teenage boys, he still strongly believed in his god and in the church, even when it was a preacher who had first raped him as a boy.

He was raised a Jew and had a bar mitzvah at 13. Then he went on his Jesus thing around the late '70s into the early 1980s. Seems that he dropped that by the '90s and then returned to it in the early '00s. Not sure what he believes today. John Lennon, who Dylan had become close friends with, had a problem with what Dylan had become (as did most of his fans) and wrote and recorded the song "Serve Yourself" directly in response to Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody". The lyrics were very hard hitting, talk about a anti religious, anti Jesus song; it made his song "God" sound tame. Most fans never heard it or it's lyrics, since it wasn't released until the late '90s, and it was only half worked on my John alone in the studio and never finished. It has John playing his guitar alone to his singing and even talking on it. It's up on YouTube, so if you have an open mind to all religions maybe not being real, or their gods for that matter, give it a listen. But if not, you'll want to skip this song, as again, it's very anti-religious and might insult your beliefs. I don't think even John wanted to do that in making this song, he was just sending Dylan and his fellow preachers a message, that there are 2 sides to everything and that maybe you are wrong Bob to preach to all of us, since not all of us wanted to hear that?
