Saint of Me/U vs BTB/Harmony singing/more

We get our weekly poll post underway for our 5 weekly polls as usual with the Stones poll, where we enter week 979, and as usual, we will run 2 different Stones polls in this one week. So this week’s first question asks this: Rate the Rolling Stones video for “Saint Of Me”

Most of this 1997 song's lyrics was written about people who converted to Christianity, while Mick notes as he sings the song's title, that nobody would ever make a of saint of he. But he actually wrote the lyrics that go with the title first, and it was in regard to the Stones' former session man, keyboardist Billy Preston, who while raised a strong believer in Christ, was told by Jagger once that he'd never make it to, or ever be, a saint in heaven, because of his lifestyle, with his different legal troubles involving drugs, rape, and insurance fraud (having been arrested on charges involving all 3), that, and the fact that he was a closet homosexual. Both Jagger and Richards found it ridiculous that Preston, who played and toured with the Stones in the past, had problems playing the Stones song "Sympathy for the Devil" live with them on stage, because he felt it was an anti-God song. Yet he would cover-up his sleeping around with men, which his religion and God condemned, and he also had played in the studio on John Lennon's anti-religion song, "God", too. So Jagger first came up with the song's title because of Preston's actions. When it was time to record the song, Preston, who hadn’t played with the Stones in several years’ time, was invited back to play on this one song by Jagger, since it was his behavior that got Mick to think up writing the song in the first place, even if the rest of the song wasn't about him. So Preston agreed to record with the Stones once again, and he ended up playing the church like sounding organ on the song. It would be his last time playing with the Stones before his death in 2005.

The video was directed by Samuel Bayer (who first directed the "Anybody Seen My Baby?" video for them) and it was released in 1998. Although Keith Richards didn't play on the song at all (not sure why, but Waddy Wachtel filled in for him in the studio), he does appear in the video.

A part of the next paragraph is a repeat from last week… but it’s still important, so let me note it again…. before you vote, do remember that yes, we are rating videos in this poll, so where I usually say at my close for a poll, that the videos are only there so you can hear the song before you vote - but don't vote on the video - well for this kind of question that doesn't apply at all, as you most definitely should vote 100% on what the video is all about for this question.

So just how will you rate this video? To cast your vote in this first poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

Now to the second Stones poll, where we run the Stones album VS matchups each week, and the new question is: Undercover vs Between the Buttons, which album do you like the best?

vs

The Undercover Polls return to the battle this week featuring the 1983 LP Undercover. In this long running series, it not only has a losing record, but the second worst record of all of the 25 studio albums that take part in these battles, with only one win and 17 loses, in 24th, or second to last place in the standings. This week it takes on the popular 1967 LP Between the Buttons, so it will have a tough matchup this week for sure. But being an album that is overall well liked doesn't necessarily mean the album will have a winning record in this series, and BTB doesn't, in 16th place at 7-9.

So do you think that Undercover could just maybe sneak out its second win this week? Well, time will tell..... To see the song list for each album, for Undercover, click here: Undercover. For Between the Buttons, U.S., click on: BTBUS. For Between the Buttons, UK, click on: BTBUK. BTW, since there’s 2 versions of BTB, as I always note to just compare the version you always listened to and forget about the one you never did, when comparing this LP against Undercover.

To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

At the first Stones poll last week we answered this question: Rate the Rolling Stones video for “Start Me Up”

The vid did very well in the voting with a ten being the highest pick, with 28.1% of the vote. You can click on the following link to see the final results: Stones Weekly Poll - week 978, poll 1. Or, you can also check out how all of the other videos that we have rated in the past, by going here: Stones Fans Top Pick Lists - Page 2, under “Video Ratings”.

Looking back at last week’s second Stones poll, the question was: Black 'n Blue vs Sticky Fingers, which album do you like the best?

vs

No, I don’t have to tell ya which LP won in a major landslide, but it was the third largest landslide win ever seen in this series, too. To see the landslide result, just click here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 978, poll 2. Or, you can see the final results and check out the updated, current album standings at the Stones VS Page 1.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll this week we enter poll week 619, and just like as we do at the Stones poll, we vote in 2 poll questions a week in this one too. The first poll’s question this week asks this: Who were the best harmony vocalists singing in a song? (Part 6 of 10)

Part 6 of this question is here, so we are more than half way through picking the top songs for the final. This week there’s 28 more great choices to choose from and vote on. Remember what I wrote here last week about how hard it will be to choose just one pick? Well, ditto for this week, too!

To vote in this poll and make your pick for this week, just click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

At the second Rock poll this week, known better as the Rock VS poll, we will vote on this new question: “Rock and Roll Music” by Chuck Berry vs “Rock and Roll Music” by The Beatles, which version of the song is better??

VS

“Rock and Roll Music” was written and released by Chuck Berry in May of 1957 and was a hit single twice for him, hitting the Top 10, at number 6 on Billboard magazine's R&B Singles chart and number 8 on its Hot 100 chart.

It was one of those songs that everybody seemed to cover, including the Beatles, who played it regularly live in the early '60s when they were first starting out, and in 1964 they made a studio take of the song which was a number 1 hit in the several different countries where it was released as a single, while it was released in the UK on the album Beatles for Sale, and in the U.S on Beatles '65. John Lennon sang the lead vocals on the Beatles cover of the song.

The Beach Boys also had a top 5 single with this song and I almost made this a 3 way VS poll, but deep down 3 seems to be a crowd when we do that in these polls, so I won't include their take in this week's poll, but may in the future put it up against whichever version wins this week.

As is the case with most of the Beatles music, their cover from the LP is not anywhere on the net to be heard. I'm not sure why, since this isn't even a Lennon/McCartney song. But the live version of the song that I found to link up to in the voting booth, sounds close enough to how the studio take on the LP sounds, just keep in mind that the studio version of this song is what we are actually voting on. So the video links to the songs in the voting booth – are only listed so you can hear the songs before you vote, but just remember, don’t rate the video for this question, just rate the music. To cast your vote, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Looking back at last week’s first Rock poll, we answered Part 5 of this question: Who were the best harmony vocalists singing in a song? (Part 5 of 10)

In last week’s round, we have 4 songs quality for Part 10, thanks to a tie for third. Those songs and singers are: “I Get Around” - Harmonies: Brian, Carl, & Dennis Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine (on The Beach Boys song at 8.8%), “Homeward Bound” - Vocal Harmonies by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel (on the Simon & Garfunkel song, at 8.4%), “Far Away Eyes” - Vocal Harmonies by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood (on the Rolling Stones song, at 6.8%), “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” - Harmonies: J Siegel, H Medress, M Margo, P Margo (on the Tokens cover, also at 6.8%).

To see the full, final results from this poll, just click here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 618.

In last week’s VS Rock poll, we answered this question: "Fingerprint File” by the Stones vs “The Crunge” by Led Zeppelin, which funk song by a non-funk band is better?

VS

Close, but one song was ahead the entire week and never once gave up that lead. To see which song that was, just click here: Rock Poll 2, week 618. You can also check out the final results at the VS Classic poll results page at the Classic Rock site, by clicking here: VS poll page 3, list page 15.

We close out this poll post as usual with the Beatles poll, where we enter week 372 of polling, and ask this new question: Rate the Beatles official video for “The Ballad of John and Yoko”

"The Ballad of John and Yoko" written by John Lennon about his and Yoko Ono's wedding and the events around it. It was released as a Beatles single in May of 1969 and was the band’s 17th and final UK No. 1 single. But the truth of the matter was that this song was actually recorded as a duo between John and Paul McCartney, when both George and Ringo were out of the country on vacation. Lennon wrote the song one day out of the blue and wanted to record it immediately. So he went over to Paul's house, got him, and the 2 headed over to the Abbey Road studio and recorded it that night, with Paul on bass, drums, piano and maracas while adding in the vocal harmony, and with John on the lead vocals, and also playing lead electric guitars, rhythm acoustic guitar, piano, and also some percussion. I believe only John's piano is the one heard on the final take of the song. George Martin got credited for being the producer, as usual, but John and Paul were really the only ones who arrange everything on this song and whom really produced the number. Martin missed half of the song's session since he got the word late they were gonna record that nite, and after the 2 were already working on it in the studio, was when he finally got there, so the song was already half finished by then. The only other person there in the studio was engineer Geoff Emerick, and this marked the return of him being the recording engineer at a Beatles session in over 2 years, as he was already working in the studio for another artist that day, and having no recording engineer lined up for the night, John asked him to join them when he saw him there and he did.

Those who have listen in to the recording of the 11 takes the 2 made that night for the song, talked about how great the 2 got along with one another in the studio, with John calling Paul "Ringo" as he played the drums, and Paul calling John "George" as he played lead guitar.

Once released, many US radio stations refused to broadcast the song because they felt it was offensive and making light of Christ’s death, since it used the word "crucify" in the lyrics (yes, ridiculous, guess they felt only Christ could be crucified, as they didn't like Lennon singing that word in the song, nor his signing the line "Christ, you know it's ain't easy", either). So while the single went to number 1 all over the world and on all of the major charts, the U.S was the only exception to this. While still landing in the top 10 here, with it being banned from the radio in half the country (including both of the top rock stations in NYC and Chicago of all places), the lack of air time thanks to the censorship caused it to never go higher than #8 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The video, which is what we are rating this week, very much covered what the song was about, featuring John and Yoko along with the 3 other Beatles. Although this is an official Beatles video, I can't find any info on the net as to its making, along with info like who directed it, etc.

Now a repeat from the first 4 weeks, and this is what I also noted above in the Stones first poll, just written a bit shorter here, that before you vote, remember we are rating videos in this poll, so you most definitely should vote 100% on what the video is all about for this question.

To see the video, and to vote and rate it, please go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we asked: Rate the Beatles official video for “We Can Work It Out”

My oh my do we love this video, as it scored the highest 10 rating out of all of the other videos that we have rated so far!

To see how high a 10 it got, click here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 371. Or, you can check out the final results at: The Beatles Videos and Movies Page, which is located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

So that takes care of the poll post for this week! I will have a board update for Gasx3 in the next day or 2 on its state and future so do look out for it.

As always, I thank all of you for voting in this week and last week’s polls!
