It may be unfortunate in cases like Trump, but changing the electoral college system would be very hard and very time consuming. I think its here to stay for the foreseeable future.
Yes, Trump is not only terrible in terms of his core values (whatever they are, they seem to change often) but he is also clearly incompetent and perhaps even unstable.
You can have an less-than competent POTUS who can do great if he simply surrounds himself with smart people and he has a system of decision making, vetting of ideas, etc. But Trump is just a whack-job pure and simple
