I think from what I've seen and read and heard, each Rolling Stone was upset by Brian Jones' passing. I think the decision to go ahead and play, and to dedicate the show to him was a good one, and a genuine one, and regardless of whether it was 48 hours or 48 days after the unhappy event, I think it would have been dedicated to Jones' memory.
There is footage of Mick Jagger saying how when they got on stage he knew Brian would be with them. You can hear him say how he knew it might be difficult to get such a large crowd to settle down, to allow him to pay the tribute he wanted to pay. On stage you can tell he is nervous, he says he has never done anything like it before. I think he wanted to be able to get that bit over, to get on with what he is more comfortable with.
Apart from anything else they also had not played for a while in front of anybody, and had a new guy whom they had never played with in front of an audience, so there must have been some apprehension.
Given all that, and what they must have been going through in the 48 hours since Jones' death, then I think the whole experience must have been extremely trying for all of them. It wasn't their greatest gig as we all know, but fair play to them for going ahead and doing it in the circumstances.
