George was the best (er, my favorite) Beatle for sure, but that's not necessarily saying much. It means more to say what a monumental musician and man the guy was in the context of the whole of music the last 60 years. He was like Brian, the one who made friends and connections with everyone, linking together from the past to the future many personalities and styles and ideas--and authenticity--not to mention technical support staff and humanitarian interests, to go along with his own unique influence. Interestingly, the more I got into him the more I got tired of his pervasive spirituality and religiosity, but his devotion to thoughtful endeavors and "mindfulness" remains admirable and impressive this many years after his death. (Personally, I'm prone to pondering and reflection but really I believe that we're just the material of the cosmos, behaving as we do under the right conditions of temperature and pressure...and that gods and afterlives, including buddhas, krishnas and reincarnation, are a ridiculous waste of time!) But George's life and works and influence are most definitely not a waste of time. Cheers to George, I'll be raising a glass for him tonight!
