SW/DW/Cream/SBM/Hidden tracks

vs.

We enter week 836 of our Stones poll and well, so far, Steel Wheels has been having a very hard time in this series of poll questions named for it, so for this week's Wheels of Steel poll, let's give this LP what might be its best chance of winning, or at the least, see a close race? The question is:Steel Wheels vs Dirty Work , which album do you like the best?

So where Steel Wheels is 0 for 4 in our Stones VS matchup polls, Dirty Work is zero for 13, and in all 13 matchups, it has lost by landslide margins, although in the very first VS poll ever run on the domain, way back in 2004, Dirty Work went up against Undercover and did manage to receive 25% of the vote, it's best tally, and well, with Steel Wheels not at all a highly rated album and also losing by landslide numbers in its 4 contests, maybe just maybe this 1986 dirty release could pull off an upset win against the album made of steel.... wheels? Then again, some might not look at DW as a underdog this week, this more than likely is it's best shot to win one of these polls, but this week's polling might be SW's best shot to win too. But I do believe Steel Wheels is more liked by fans, so I'll call it the favorite over Dirty Work. By this time next week we will know for sure which album is liked more.

So are you ready to make your pick? To vote, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked:Steel Wheels vs Tattoo You , which album do you like the best? As already noted, Steel Wheels didn't do too well going up against Tattoo You. But by just how large a landslide did it lose by? You can check out that info using this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 835 . I’ll also add the results of this poll to the Stones VS Page, where at the top of the page you can check out the standings on how each album as done in these long running VS polls.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll, its week 478, and as usual, we will vote in 2 different polls for the week. In the first poll we will ask this: Who was the most underrated member of Cream?

Cream started out in 1966, but they would be a short lived band, only staying together until late 1968. The trio was formed when Eric Clapton was asked by drummer Ginger Baker if he would form a new group with him. Clapton said yes, but only if Jack Bruce was to be the bassist and lead singer, as he was impressed with his bass playing. Bruce had played earlier in the same band with Baker (in the Graham Bond Organization) and the two flat out hated each other; they would fight with each other often, even when they were up on stage. Baker felt he was the band's leader and in time he tried to fire Bruce from the band, but Bruce didn't recognize his authority and kept showing up and playing at shows. After several shows, a fed up Baker pulled a knife on Bruce before a show, demanding that Bruce leave - or else. Bruce finally decided to leave after being threaten in that matter.

But the 2 put their differences aside at Clapton's insistence, and Cream was formed. The trio was a big hit, selling more than 15 million albums worldwide. Their biggest hits were "I Feel Free" (UK, #11),"Sunshine of Your Love" (US,#5), "White Room" (US,#6), "Crossroads" (US,#28), and "Badge" (UK,#18). The band would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, and there were talks at that time that they might have a reunion, but any reunion would be more than 10 years off. They finally did get back together for four shows in May of 2005 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and then that October, 2 more shows were held at MSG in NYC. There was talk of some more shows in time, but no more took place and then on October 25, 2014, Bruce died of liver disease in England at the age of 71, ending any hope for any more Cream reunions.

If you would like to know more about this band, then instead of me writing up more here, you can just go to the Cream Bio page at the Classic Rock site and read what I wrote about them there before you vote.

Now unlike other weeks in this poll, we only got 3 choices to choose from this week. Who will you pick? To vote in this week’s first rock poll, just click on: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For this week’s VS poll, we ask: 'Stand By Me': Ben E King's original vs John Lennon’s cover, which version is better? We're in our third week of a solo Beatles VS poll series of questions, as we vote on this cover by Lennon, going up against the original version of the song by King.

"Stand by Me" was originally performed by singer-songwriter Ben E. King. He wrote the lyrics with Jerry Leiber and the music with Mike Stoller. Songwriting credits on the single were shown as "King/Elmo Glick" — a pseudonym used by Leiber and Stoller, but both have stated that most of the song was written by King. The song was later used and featured on the soundtrack of the 1986 film Stand by Me.

But back when he first wrote the ditty, King had no intention of recording the song himself, as he wrote it for The Drifters, who passed on recording it. He then show the song to producers Leiber and Stoller, who helped him finished writing the song and talked King into recording the song himself. King did that and his record went to No. 1 on the R&B charts and was a Top Ten hit on the U.S. charts - twice — in its original release in 1961, when it peaked at No. 4, and in 1986, when it was re-released as the theme song for the movie of the same name, and it peaked at No. 9. It then reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart in 1987. You can bet The Drifters wished they had taken the song when it was offered to them!

John Lennon recorded his version of the song for his 1975 album Rock 'n' Roll, his cover album of late 1950s and early 1960s songs. Lennon's cover was his last hit prior to his five-year retirement from music. His cover had a more rocking sound to it than King's take. Lennon filmed a performance of the song for a UK TV show called The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1975, although the tune only made it to #30 on the UK charts. But in the US it was a big hit, where it went to number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart (the song would hit #1 one more time when Mickey Gilley took it there on the country chart in 1980).

Two cool videos to both versions of the song can be viewed at the voting booth, with the Lennon one showing how close John was to Yoko, yet the single was released when the 2 were broken up and the B side of the single was "Move Over Ms L", a song somewhat critical towards Yoko, although some say that song was tongue-in-cheek. Anyway, just remember, if you play the vids, enjoy them, but we aren't rating them at all, only the songs count when you vote.

So which version of this song do you dig more? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: Who was the most underrated member of the Grateful Dead? . Phil Lesh was the top pick in a field so close, that he took first place with the smallest percentage seen (only 15.8%) since we’ve be asking this question about different bands.

To see the full, final and very close results from this poll, click on: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 477. Or you can check out the list of each person selected from all of the other bands that we already voted on at the Top Ten Lists, Page, 11.

In last week’s VS poll, we asked: 'Beware of Darkness': George Harrison's original vs Leon Russell’s cover, which version is better? Well another week and another win for a Beatle.

At the Beatles’ poll we enter week 231, and the new poll question will ask: What is the best hidden track on a Beatles album or CD? Here's a good question that hasn't been asked yet at any of our polls, and since the Beatles were the first rock band to include hidden tracks on an album, we'll start asking this question with them first, and in time do one for the Stones, and then one for classic rock.

I was able to come up with 10 such Beatle tracks that no question were hidden, one way or another. We talked a couple of weeks ago here about false endings and with one or two of these songs that I list this week, some might feel they are a part of a false ending and not a hidden track. Well that may or may not be the case, it's really hard to tell on some songs, so I placed these songs in both polls, even if they got to be only one of the two….. Also note that the titles I used to identify the hidden tacks aren't all official titles, some are titles fans have given to the tracks.

To vote in this week’s interesting Beatles poll and make your pick, please use this link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we asked What is the best falsetto in a Beatle song? I almost didn't run this question for the Beatles poll last week, since I didn't think it was the greatest of questions for this band, but to my total surprise, the Beatles poll last week saw its highest total of votes ever cast! So was it the question itself that got out the vote so well? No, I don't think so, the Beatles poll has just finally caught up with the other polls on the domain in popularly. This poll always lagged behind the Stones and Rock polls in votes casted each week, and I was never sure why, after all, there are a lot of Beatles fans out there. But in the last year it has seen a steady increase in vote totals and now receives as many votes as the other weekly polls see, and in some weeks, like last week, more votes than those other polls.

So, even with all of these votes cast, the finial results were very close, and in the end, “Because” - Falsetto sung by John, Paul and George, was the top pick at 8.9%, just over “In My Life” - Falsetto sung by John, at 8.6%.

To see how the other songs did in the voting, you can check out the final results here: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 230. Or, you can check out the top pick at the Beatles Favorite Beatles Songs page located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

Well that’s it for this week’s poll post…. Here in Colorado, summer is officially over I guess, as the kids head back to school in the morning. I recall when I lived back east, school always started after Labor Day and got out the last week in June. Here they get out in mid-May. I wonder if NY schools still wait till September to start up again or not? Anyway, here at my house, it’s just me and my grandson Cooper residing, as his mom is now living an hour down the road with her old man who has finally gotten back to Colorado, but the boy wants to keep living with grandpa, which is fine with me. It just seems funny that’s he already in bed for the night, as he has to get up at 6am (too early!) for school, but he’s as bad an night owl as I am and usually stays up all night when school’s out. But he’s been that way his entire childhood, so it’s weird not to have him up at such an early time. But the kids here got a brand new school building this year, so he’s excited about tomorrow. Their new school comes thanks in part to the new marijuana sales tax that funds our schools, our area gets a nice share of the money taxed as long as our county allows the sale of marijuana, and we do. Gotta think those many school districts in eastern Colorado where they don’t allow any sales, wish now that maybe they did allow this harmless plant to be sold in stores, since many of those small farming communities are broke with very old school buildings and no spare cash to build new ones. They are fools to say the least, and their kids are the real losers in the end.

Oh well, everybody have a great week ahead, and thanks to all of you for voting in our polls!
