Jim's "official" cause of death is not worth much since there was no autopsy. I'm sure that if he indeed died of an overdose, Pam tried to cover that up as best she could.

One story goes that at the time, there was some very pure heroin circulating in Paris and that fatal overdoses were on the rise. It is said that Jim was sold an undetermined amount of this product by one Jean de Bréteuil (now deceased), who was "acquainted" with Marianne Faithfull. This story may even have originated with Marianne herself.

I have no idea whether this story is true or not. Again, Jim was scared of heroin and didn't want to touch it. So the whole thing is, to say the least, strange.
