That's part of the mystery of Jim's death Keno. I've also heard it said that he helped himself to Pam's stash. She was a known user and it's what caused her own death in 1974. But again, why would he do it if he was scared?

There are several people who were close to Jim in Paris who claim to know more than what has been said. But they're all conveniently clamming up so it's impossible to know if they really do know something or if this is just a "look at me!" kind of claim.
