Pam, and then she died something like a year later

She died in 1974, three years after Jim.

Another weird thing about his death is that it was apparently due to a heroin overdose. As far as anyone could tell, because there was no autopsy (why? no one knows!) Yet Jim was afraid of heroin, didn't want to touch it and was always on Pam's case because she was a user.

So did he indeed die of a heroin overdose? If so, what made him try it?
