The 'Bitch' Keeps Bitchin' In Raleigh! (Part 2)

I ordered more bourbon and beer. I asked about cabs and her BF gave me a number. The cabby showed up at the bar just as I was finishing the last of my beer. By now I was feeling no pain. The time was approaching 8 PM.

No surprise that my cab driver, "Allah", I believe his name was, was Indian. He was a good fella and he had lived in Raleigh 5 years and spoke English well. We found the traffic jam a mile and a half away from the stadium. It took us A LONG TIME to travel another half mile. Allah said he had never seen traffic like it in all the time he had lived in Raleigh. At the .8 mile point I gave Allah a twenty for the 14 dollar fare and headed out on foot in my sandals. Luckily the stadium parking lot was less than a hundred yards away through the bushes.

"More Booze! I must find more booze!", was all I could think of as I walked quickly through the parking lot which was quickly becoming abandoned at 8:45.

"Ten dollars for a beer!", I exclaim loudly to the first group of tailgaters I came upon. I had to settle for a Bud Light, and the dude insisted the beer was free. I polished it off in less than 5 minutes. Gave the guy a fist bump and headed towards the stadium again.

"Ten Dollars for a beer!", I said to the next group. This time it was a Bud Light Cactus, or something. I drank it super fast trying not to taste it in the process. Then I moved on. These people in Raleigh would not let me pay for a beer! Then off I went again.

"Ten dollars for a beer."

This group was some college students. They had a very tasty apple cider they handed me and they were so great I had to spend some real time with them chatting about the Stones, Raleigh and Roanoke. I gave the girl five dollars despite her insistence the cider was free. I said, "Sorry. That baby was too good not to pay for it and I really appreciate it. Do me a favor and take the money!" I believe it was a local brew. I know it was not Angry Orchard or the other big company. It was damn good! And I felt now I was ready for the show. I finally had a truly good taste in my mouth and my buzz was soaring again.

It was after 9 so it was time to go inside. They made me empty my pockets and used a hand held metal detector. I was now glad I did not try to smuggle in airplane bottles of booze. Considering the stories I had heard of this place for other shows in the past, well it could have been worse. I was in my seat with a tall southern style iced tea by 9:20. That's extra sweet with plenty of ice for you folks north of the Mason-Dixon line. You guys drink your tea hot and unsweetened. Yuck! How can you do that?!

My 99 dollar seat is 11 rows up in the corner of the end zone on Ronnie's side. Soon I hear someone behind me start bitching on why the Stones have not started. "Have they made it here yet?!! Did they get lost?!" It's 9:29 and I assure the grumblers the Stones will be playing by 9:40 at least. A woman says, "Oh we have a professional Stones fan with us." I ask if she wants to know the opening song. She says nothing but I hear a couple of concert goers say, "Yes! What's the first song?!". "Jumping Jack Flash" I say, and someone says, "That's a great one!" I say, "Yes. I could tell you 80% of the setlist but I'm not going to. It might ruin it for you. But know you are in for a great setlist tonight!" Seconds later, at 9:33 the stadium went dark. And I could feel the eyes behind me looking at me, thinking, "Who IS this guy?!". lol

The vid starts up and soon Keith is hitting the opening chords for JJF! Yet there is something wrong. It all sounds distorted as the band joins him and before the song was halfway through I was up and walking to the next section. The sound was only slightly better there so I made my way up the stairs. It sounded like a stereo which had the BASS turned all the way up, and the Treble turned way down into the negative...until I reached the landing above the end zone stands. Ironically where the cheapest seats were located. Not as high as you might expect. Carter-Finley is a small football stadium and this sold out show had only 40 thousand souls inside. Up there is where I enjoyed the show on my feet through Rambler. It sounded good right there in the middle section above the back seats and I am feeling sorry for everybody sitting down directly in front of me. Ridiculous how bad it sounded down there! The "Sweet Spot" was small near the end zone but I had found it.

IORR, LSTNT, and Tumbling Dice followed. Next is 'Doom And Gloom' I know and then HOPEFULLY, BITCH! Yet a buzzing TM is shocked to hear the bassline to 'Out Of Control' take shape and my first thought is one of fear. Wholesale changes in the setlist tonight?! Will a new setlist leave my BITCH behind?!!!! I calm myself. Tell myself, "If it's meant to be. It's meant to be. They will either play Bitch or they will not. Enjoy 'Out Of Control'." And it WAS enjoyable. The second best song on Bridges is one of their best of the latter day Stones. I loved hearing it.

Once it finished, time stood still. My heart started pounding - beating like a big Bass drum! What only took seconds seemed like a lifetime as I waited for what I was hoping would be my favorite Stones song period! I had never seen it performed live. Would that continue after this night?
