The 'Bitch' Keeps Bitchin' In Raleigh! (Part 1)

Well that sharp litho of a wolf howling at a golden Stones full moon would prove to be very symbolic regarding my adventures in Raleigh. I would be a lone wolf prowling about Raleigh during the day and prowling about Carter-Finley stadium that night - in search of the ultimate "sweet spot". Two local friends reluctantly passed on going down with me after days of consideration. (Their women would not approve the road trip!) And the two friends who I was suppose to meet to do some pre show partying with had their hotel reservations screwed up. So taking a taxi to meet them at their different hotel 10 more miles away seemed like a bad idea money-wise. (My motel was only four miles from the stadium.)

Luckily my room was walking distance from a bar called O'Malley's where you could sit and enjoy an adult beverage under the umbrellas and smoke 'em if you got 'em. I knew Carter-Finley, home of NC State, would be serving no alcohol inside the stadium, so getting well lubricated prior to the show was paramount in my preshow plans.

Keep in mind I was not saddened at all by these turn of events which had me on my own for the road trip and the show. I love people but there is a lone wolf which resides inside of me as well. Everyone is my friend until proven otherwise and as it turned out I needed to be on my own at the show for maximum enjoyment of our band.

As you know, it is easy to get too excited about a Stones show the night before it takes place. I can't remember the last time I saw a Stones show on a decent nights sleep, so Tuesday night I decided to do some drinking in the bars here locally to be able to sleep well at night. Jumbo margaritas and a few beers did the trick. I got a full 8 hours of sleep and woke up at 8:30 AM, the day of the show.

First thing I did was check the Official site and low and behold I see they have that full moon and wolf litho bundled with a t-shirt of the same design for $70, 20 dollars off. I had already decided to buy both at the show if offered. So I was happy to place my order online. Now I would not have to be concerned about finding either at the show. I was free to roam, and got exactly what I wanted in the right size and at a discount to boot! So the day started off great!

I already had the "Green Hornet" gassed up and ready to go so by 10:30 I was heading south in the old Benz. Made a special CD for the road trip which had several songs from the John Fogerty album 'Revival', selected AC/DC tracks from 'If You Want Blood', Thin Lizzy's 'Cowboy Song' and the "new" Alternate 'Bitch' and 'Midnight Rambler' from the SF Bonus disc. It gave me great pleasure on the drive down as did the other mixed CDs in the the Benz's audio holster of six. A local friend named my old Mercedes btw. Dusty comes in a favorite bar of ours months ago and says to me, "I seen the "Green Hornet" parked outside as I was driving by so I knew I needed to come in!" Dusty saw the Stones in '82 in Munich while he was in the Army. He still raves about that show. I am working on finding him an audio boot of the show he attended.

I took my time, and did not compete with the NC leadfoots on I-40 doing 80 in a 65. I arrived at my motel at 3. Took a shower and put on my '81 Stones Tour knock off t-shirt for the show. It was hot outside and that shirt was the most lightweight I brought with me. Had dinner at a place across the street called, 'Casa Carbone'. I was thinking Mexican and a starter margarita. It was an expensive Italian restaurant instead. The bartender assured me he could make me a jumbo frozen margarita so I stayed. I had the Beef Braciole for you foodies, and the margarita wasn't half bad. I get the news from my friend Ed that traffic jams are forming shortly after I leave for O'Malleys. I was suppose to meet Ed and his GF at the Backyard Bistro across from the stadium for a few drinks before the show. The traffic jams would make that impossible. I ordered a double shot of Crown, and a Harp at O'Malleys and went outside to a table. (I was not going to see a Stones show sober like I did in Charlottesville in 2005!) I ordered Crown because our guy Keefer always pours that into his "Magic Flask" for a Stones show. lol. Fond memories of sharing Crown with him, on several occasions and Rebel Yell with Undercover up in Chicago. A young woman asked if she could sit down and share my ashtray and I said "Of course." With Pink Floyd playing through the outdoor speakers I learned her and her BF were big Jimmy Buffett fans. So I entertained them with the story of my Jimmy Buffett meeting back in the Navy days. They loved the story. Especially that Jimmy played 3 songs on a sailors guitar for a group of 250 which was completely unplanned. They were friendly and lamented the fact they had not bought tickets to see the Stones.
