Stripped/Autobiographical songs/VS/Solo Fabs

It’s time to start up week 824 of our Stones with this question: Rate the artwork for the front cover of Stripped Well, we are now down the final 4 albums from this long running series of questions asking everybody to rate the covers of all of the Stones albums, a question that we first started to ask back in February of 2012.

Stripped was released in 1995 and is the closest thing to a Stones Unplugged LP. The album features a mixture of live and studio recordings of songs from their previous catalogue, other than 2 exceptions, one being the cover of Willie Dixon's "Little Baby", and a cover of Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone". But what we of course go for in the vote here has nothing to do with what’s inside the LP, but what’s on the cover. This one has a photo of the entire band, and they’re all wearing sun glasses. The photo was taken by Anton Corbijn, and that’s all I really know about it. Always wondered where it was taken, anybody know?

So how would you rate this cover? Click on: Stones Weekly Poll, to cast your vote!

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Should the Stones bring back the B stage for their live shows? The last of the pre-tour questions and us fans were very clear as to what we would prefer to see stage wise on this one, with a landslide decision voted on in the end.

To see the poll’s final results, just click on this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 823 ..

At the Classic Rock Poll, it’s week 466, and as usual, we will vote in 2 different polls for the week. In the first poll we will ask a brand new question, which is: What is the best autobiographical rock song (Part 1 of 3) There aren’t that many of this type of rock songs as you might think, as most artists don’t care to write about themselves, but when they do, some very interesting songs come from the effort.

Now the song does have to be autobiographical to make the list. If a band recorded the song, then it can’t be a song written by one of the band’s members for or about another member, the person the song is about had to at least have a hand in writing a part of the song.

I came up with 64 songs on the list we will run in the first 2 parts, then the top songs from both weeks will be voted on again in Part 3 to pick the best one. I will bet that I missed a handful of songs, since I don’t claim to know every artist that well, so if I did miss a good one, please let me know, thanks. Ready to vote? Great!, just click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

In this week’s VS poll, we ask this: Going Mobile' (by The Who) vs 'Call Me the Breeze' (by Lynyrd Skynyrd), which one of these 2 songs about a traveler is better?

We’ve been looking at songs about rolling stones in the last few weeks with our VS questions, and for one last week we will ask one more. Both songs featured this week are very upbeat and talk about the freedom of living on the road.

"Call Me the Breeze" is a song written by JJ Cale and which he recorded in 1970, but he didn’t release it until 1972. But it wasn't until Lynyrd Skynyrd covered this number another 2 years later, when the song became well known and a hit, with them first releasing it on their studio album Second Helping , and then again 2 years later on the live disc One More From The Road. Skynyrd played this song like it was theirs, no question about it. Check out the cool live performance link from a 1975 BBC special that you will find in the voting booth.

“Going Mobile" is a song written by Pete Townshend and originally released by The Who on their 1971 album Who's Next. Besides writing the song, Townshend also handles the lead vocals on this one too, as lead singer Roger Daltrey did not take part in the recording of the song. It’s perhaps the most favorite song of the Who as far as songs that Townshend sang the lead on, and one of the best tunes on a very strong album, too.

So which song out of the 2 will you vote for? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: Of the songs that repeat the same lyrics over and over again, which one is best? (Part 5 of 5) As is now usual for the final part of a multiple week question, the final week once again did well in voter turnout. At one time earlier in the week, we had a 5 way tie for first place, but things did change to where in the end, there was only one tie in the top 10, and that involved 2 Stones songs. I must say that the top song chosen was a great pick, and that number 1 one song picked was…. “Kiss Him Goodbye” by the fake band Steam, and it’s repeated lyrics of 'Na na na na, na na na, hey hey, goodbye' , which are repeated 42 times in the song – and countless other times to this day at sport areas - at least all over the the US anyway, whenever a player of the opposing team is kicked out of a game, or when a home team beats it’s opponent. This song was supposed to be a B side single by Gary DeCarlo, and written and recorded by him and his 2 former band mates Paul Leka, and Dale Frashuer from the band The Chateaus, which had broken up several years before. His 2 former mates had visited him in the studio when he needed a B side to his new single and he decided on using this old song, with his 2 friends helping out on backing vocals. When the record label heard the B side, they wanted it as the A side instead, and with DeCarlo not liking the song too much, he wouldn’t let his name be used, nor did the The Chateaus want their name attached to the song either, so DeCarlo made up the name “Steam” to be use instead, and then the song once released, went all the way to number 1 on the charts and stayed there for several weeks. A band was then put together and called “Steam”, just to back the song on tour and in a video, but DeCarlo, nor Leka or Frashuer, wanted to be a part of this fake band, and none of them were in it for the video or the tour, even though it was their own old song that they recorded together.

To see where all of the other songs from this poll ended up, click on: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 465. You can also check out the Top 10 list from this poll at Top Ten Lists, Page, 11.

In last week’s VS poll, we asked: 'The Wanderer' (by Dion) vs 'Melissa' (by The Allman Brothers Band), which one of these 2 songs about a traveler is better? As is usually the case, yet another very close final result to a VS question, and also again, as is usual in the VS poll, I voted for the song that lost. To see which song ended up on top, just go here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 465. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

Now to our Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 219, and this week we ask: Which Beatle had the best solo career? I had noted last week with the question I asked, that Ringo could finally, maybe, actually win a Beatles poll question thanks to the question being asked, and for this week, perhaps another question that he could win?

All 4 of the Beatles did well on their own once the band broke up, and by “best solo career” I mean everything they did solo, not just the records they released, but everting that they took part in. If nothing else, Ringo had the most surprising solo career, as nobody figured he would make it on his own, but he clearly did. But was his solo work the best out of the 4? To vote this week’s Beatles poll and let us know, just use this link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: Which Beatle acted the best in their movies? So did Ringo finally come out on top in one of our poll questions? To see if that was the case, you can go here to find out: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 218. Or, you can check out the final results at the Beatles miscellaneous Poll Page, located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

I thank all of you who take part in the voting each week in our polls! I also hope that all of my fellow US Gassers who have off from work tomorrow for the Memorial Day holiday, will enjoy your extra day off! Somehow today I pulled off that BBQ that I talked about earlier here at Gasland, even with rain and snow falling on and off for most of the morning, but the sun came out around 2 PM and it warmed up some, to about 50 degrees (F), and that was the window I needed to get the grill going and the food cooked! You know the old saying, if there’s a will, there’s a way! Nothing like a Memorial Day weekend cookout between snowflakes falling and the sun shining (and that can only happen in Colorado this time of the year, I guess).
