I think Exile is originally much better produced than people give it credit for. The original vinyl pressing I have is much less "muddy" than subsequent releases, maybe until the Virgin remaster from 1994. I don't know what happened there, but that album may have had vocals somewhat low in the mix (on purpose), but it originally sounded quite nice, if you ask me. The original CBS cd leaves a lot to be desired, and maybe that's why everyone always picked on the sound quality there.
