Well Keith said the beginnings of the conflict started around Exile On Main Street... over the next few years however Mick largely was in control of the band because Keith was deep into drugs. Keith claims that by 78 he was no longer completely a junkie, and ready to help out again, only Mick did not want his help running the band:
"When I returned to the fold after closing down the laboratory, I came back into the studio with Mick... to say, Thanks, man, for shouldering the burden - that's why I wrote Beast of Burden for him, I realise in retrospect - and the weird thing was that he didn't want to share the burden any more. "
Anyway, that was sort of a brewing conflict- my best suggestion would be to go to timeisonourside.com, where this is an excellent chronicle of their history in the "database" section
