Poll Post for the week starting Monday, April 8

Well my fellow voters, we came real close to having no poll this week, as, without going into detail, since for the most part I no longer like to talk about this kind of stuff, unless I have to, but let's just say because of me being a senior, and living with the joys and pains that go with being one, well, that's why we almost had no polls to vote in this week, as, let me just say, I wasn't feeling up to putting them together. But about an hour ago (it’s early Sunday afternoon as I type this) I'm back to being my full happy self again, so I feel up to getting the polls done now. I already had the next Beatle poll figured out and ready to be built and placed online a week ago, but I still at this time haven’t decided yet what the Stones Poll will be, other than for this week it's the Ron Wood era’s turn for me to pick a song from for us to rate (and one thing great about these song rating polls, is you can come up with a question to use in seconds! Especially with the Ron Wood era of the band, where we have to most songs left to rate). So with that in mind, I'll leave the rest of the Poll Post to write up tonight and head over to my poll files and pick out a Ronnie Wood era song for us to rate for this new week!

Okay, it’s Sunday nite now and yes, I now have picked a good one for this week! So, for week 1,286 of the Stones Poll, we enter week 177 of rating all of the band’s songs. Here’s the song that we’re rating this week: Rate the Stones song “Blinded by Rainbows”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).

“Blinded by Rainbows” From the song’s lyrics video

As I just noted up above, I didn't have a clue what Stones' song we would rate this week, and then saw in my poll file’s list of unrated songs, that there were way too many songs from Voodoo Lounge that we hadn’t gotten to yet. But how did I miss this gem? Listening to it today, as an old peacenik, who was sick of war even when I was just a boy and an older kid down the street who I looked up to, was drafted and went to Viet Nam, and after he was killed there, well, I hated all wars after that happen, as it all hit home on that day. I can still recall, I was 12 at the time, and I was outside and heard a sudden, terrible, horrible cry coming from inside my house, and the only one in there was my mom. When I got in the house to see what was wrong, mom was on the phone talking to one of the neighbors. She had just gotten the word about the Bradey kid who lived down the road, yeah, that cool older kid, and he just had gotten killed – well, blown up in Nam.

I hadn’t paid too much attention about wars before that. Yeah, my dad was a vet from WW2 and he told me some stories about it. But he came home from that war in one piece, so all was fine, and that war happen before I was even born. I can also recall, in the summer of 1962, when I found mom in the basement, placing gallons of bottled water in a safe place. I asked her what she was doing and she told me that we might be going to war, and that Castro might send bombs our way (we lived outside of NYC) from Cuba. That news scared the crap out of me. But JFK I guess knew what he was doing this time (after the problems he had with the Bay of Pigs, although it was Eisenhower who authorized that), and no war took place. So that was the first-time war scared me, but nobody died, either, since there was no war.

But it wasn't until somebody I knew and liked, got killed in a war, that was when I first hated wars, and as an old man today, I still despise all wars. Last nite listening to an online radio station, the old Edwin Starr song "War" came on, and that brought back some memories, what a great anti-war song that was; I hadn’t heard in a while. I guess that was in the back of my mind when I had to pick out a Stones song to rate and saw we hadn’t done "Blinded by Rainbows" yet. That in turn made me think of the latest war in the Middle East, that our (U.S.) president, who I feel is otherwise doing a good enough job overall - even if he's way too old for the job, is totally getting this war wrong, as far as sending U.S. aid to Israel, as the bombs we are sending them, to kill those in Hamas, will only cost us in time. But don't kid yourself if you're a Trump fan, cause if he was in office right now, he would be doing the same exact thing! Why, when it comes to wars, do both U.S. parties agree with each other? Yeah, I know, both a few Reps in the GOP and a few Dem Reps too, don't want this, but other than stating that, they are doing nothing to stop it. Biden is making the mistake of his life right now! We will pay for this one way or another - history has shown that. Hell, 9-11 was only a bit more than 20 years ago. Why didn't our government learn the lesson back then? We in time will now see another 9-11 take place because of Biden's sending of weapons to Israel, mark my words, Hamas won't forget this, or forgive us! Israel doesn't need our bombs; they need to get rid of that nut Benjamin Netanyahu! Only men and women of war make war happen, and only men and women of peace, get it to stop!

I noted here last week that I retired Mumbo Jumble for good, but yes, this is just an unannounced Mumbo Jumble from me, guess I can never totally stop writing it, and when I'm pissed off, I write about what's causing that, and once again it's another goddamn war! Mick Jagger wrote "Blinded by Rainbows" because he's true to his feelings when it comes to stuff like war, he hates it as much as the rest of us do and he wrote this great song, and as far as anti-war songs go, it's as good as anything the late, great John Lennon wrote on this subject. Or any other great songwriter ever wrote! Yeah, I'm the poll master and I'm not supposed to say that in the Poll Post. But if your pro-war, then you aren't a good person anyway, and more than likely, such people don't ever come here to a former board run by a liberal, goddamn hippie, so they won’t get to read this anyway. People who love war can’t read too well as it goes anyway, all they know and all they like to do, is to hate others for no reason, and play video games of war and kill on there.

But let me talk more now about the song. I realized it would make for a great song to rate this week, and I'll dedicate it to Biden in hopes he will open up his closed eyes and see the truth and take us out of this mess that he's supporting. Your words to Israel don’t work Joe, Netanyahu doesn't give a fuck about you or what you have to say to him. As the song askes, “Do you sleep at night?”.... supporting a war monger like Netanyahu? “I doubt it”.

Yeah, I know, I’m supposed to be writing about the song, and I am; it got me in this mood when I played the official YouTube lyric video for it (that is linked to at the voting page). It brought tears to my eyes (a lyrics video did that? Well, it’s a good lyrics video I guess). Thanks to the things that our president is supporting, that brings tears to my eyes, too, and to think, he’s running against a true criminal, a true orange pig. Damn, I gonna have to hold my nose once again when I vote for Biden again come November! But what a great song Mick wrote, sad that he had to write it in the first place, and so sad that it still rings true 30 years later.

"Blinded by Rainbows" was recorded in July and August of 1993, and then worked on some more in November and December of that year, then released on the album Voodoo Lounge, on July 12, 1994. IMO, it's as much an underrated song as any antiwar song is. Thank you, Mick, for writing it and reminding us that fighting wars aren't ever the answer to anything!

Here's the studio lineup for this one: Mick Jagger: Lead Vocal & Acoustic Guitar; Keith Richards: Rhythm Guitar & Backing Vocal; Ron Wood: Electric Guitar Solo; Charlie Watts: Drums; with Bass Guitar by Darryl Jones; Organ & Piano played by Benmont Tench; and Percussion by Lenny Castro. Let’s now look at last week’s voting in the Stones Poll, as we answered this: Rate the Stones song “Just Want to See His Face”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest) (Poll 1).

“Just Want to See His Face” From the Exile LP

.

Well, I guess it isn’t just me who doesn’t care for this number, as it’s top rating was only a 7, in what was very close voting for spots 5 thru 8.

Let’s now have a look-see at this week’s Beatles Poll, we enter week 675 of voting, and week 109 of rating their songs. Here’s this week’s new question and song to rate: Rate the Beatles song, “She's Leaving Home”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest)

“She's Leaving Home” From the newspaper story about runaway Melanie Coe

Recorded on 17, 20 March 1967, and released on 1 June 1967 (UK), and on June 2, 1967 (U.S.), on Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. One of the rare, true Lennon/McCartney songs, as both of them had a hand in writing this gem. "She's Leaving Home" is a song that was first started by Paul McCartney, after he had read, in February of 1967, about a 17-year-old A-level schoolgirl from a town north of London, named Melanie Coe, who ran away from home. She went missing, leaving all of her belongings behind. So, while Paul wrote a bunch in the song about stuff that didn’t actually happen and had nothing to do with this gal, it was her running way that inspire him to start writing the song in the first place. In the end, it had its verses written and sung by Paul, and with its chorus written and its lead vocal sung by John, with the backing high vocal sung by Paul. The funny thing about this song and Coe, was that the Beatles had met her 4 years before, on 4 October 1963, when she won a miming competition on the TV music show Ready Steady Go!. The Beatles were making their first appearance on the show that day, and Paul choose her as the winner of the miming award and he then presented it to her. Paul had no clue the song he wrote about the runaway in the paper, was about the same girl he met 4 years earlier! It's also fun to watch the video from the old TV show, no question, as she did deserve the award out of the 4 who went up against each other miming, see here: https://youtu.be/IgQ1qNPciic.

The other 2 Beatles didn't appear on this song, and this one was one of the few Beatle songs where none of the members of the band played any instruments on, as the song's instrumental background was performed by a string orchestra arranged by Mike Leander and conducted by George Martin. Once written, Paul was in a hurry to get the song recorded. So, he had this to say on how, in doing so, wanting it done so fast, that he pissed off Martin: "The thing I remember is that George Martin was offended that I used another arranger. He was busy and I was itching to get on with it; I was inspired. I think George had a lot of difficulty forgiving me for that. It hurt him; I didn't mean to" Paul seem to hurt or piss off most everybody in the band from time to time, didn't he?

Here’s who played with John and Paul on this one: Paul McCartney – Lead Vocal, Backing Vocal; John Lennon – Lead Vocal on chorus, and Backing Vocal; with the string orchestra: Violins: Erich Gruenberg, Derek Jacobs, Trevor Williams, José Luis García; Violas: John Underwood, Stephen Shingles; Cello: Dennis Vigay, Alan Dalziel, Peter Halling; Double Bass: Gordon Pearce; Harp: Sheila Bromberg; Orchestra conductor and song Producer: George Martin. Looking at last week’s Beatles poll results. The question asked was: Rate the Beatles song, “I'm So Tired”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest)

“I'm So Tired” From the White Album

The top score for this Lennon number was a 10. To see where in the standings this 10 rating for the song landed, click on the following link: The Beatles Song Ratings and Standings Page . Or, to take a look at the full, finial poll numbers, just go here: Beatles Poll, week 674.

So that will do it for this week’s 2 new polls. I of course thank all of you who voted! It seems that the entire U.S. had insane weather this past week, with record rain and flooding in the northeast (along with an earthquake in the NYC/Philly areas). Out here in Colorado, we had hurricane winds in some places, here we had 2 days of 50 mph winds. Next up for the Midwest and Eastern U.S. is Monday’s solar eclipse of the sun. I never got too excited by this, other than it’s weird when it’s at totality and it’s dark as dust and the temps drops. But other than when it’s at totality, you really can’t watch it, so I doesn’t bug me that it more than likely will be the last one during my lifetime, and where I live, it will be only at 65%. So I won’t even take a look at it! My daughter and her old man are in Texas, where there it will be a true 100% deal, but they aren’t there to see it, it just so happens her old man Rocky, had to help out a childhood friend who has MS, install a special shower, and Rocky is a plumber by trade. That’s the way my entire family always been (even the in-laws), we like to help others, since it’s the right way to be! If everybody on the planet would be that way, we would all be better off if we lived in that matter!

I hope you all have a great week ahead, and if you are where the eclipse is, protect your eyes, and don’t be a fool and end up blind!
