Poll Post for the week starting Monday, January 17

Time to get this week’s Poll Post off and running for our 4 new weekly polls that we’ll vote on this week. We’ll talk first about the Rolling Stones poll, where we’ll enter week 1,172 of voting and week 63 of rating the Stones songs. So, this week’s question will ask: Rate the Stones song “Sway”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).

“Sway”, B side to "Wild Horses", in 1971.

"Sway” was released on what so many of us Rolling Stone fans say was the band’s greatest album, Sticky Fingers, back in 1971; it was also released as the B-side of the "Wild Horses" U.S. single. The lyrics were written by Mick Jagger, with some of the music written by Jagger too. But most of the music was put together by the other Mick (Taylor), who was of course not credited for his work, as it showed up as yet another lie from the Glimmer Twins as a “Jagger/Richards” song, even with Keith Richards having nothing to with the tune, as he was in the deep mist of his heroin problems at the time and he only added in backing vocals to the number after the song was finished. Taylor noted years later that this was one of several songs that he wrote for the Stones that he wasn’t credited for, and the main reason why he left the band.

In the song’s lyrics, Jagger talks about being brough down too often from the sway of the demon life that he and his bandmates lived, and how he wasn’t gonna allow himself to shed “tears out on the dusty ground for my friends out on the burial ground”, as that was his way to get around all of that evil stuff in his life.

The following is the lineup for this song: Mick Jagger – Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar; Mick Taylor – Lead Guitar, Bottleneck Slide Guitar, Guitar Solo; Bill Wyman – Bass Guitar; Charlie Watts – Drums; Nicky Hopkins – Piano; Paul Buckmaster – String arrangement; and Pete Townshend, Billy Nichols, Ronnie Lane and Keith Richards – Backing Vocals.

Let’s rate this week’s song right now. To do that, just click on the following link: Stones Weekly Poll.... Also note that and please remember that we aren’t rating the video for the song here, only the song itself. The video link is included at the voting page only so you can hear the song before you vote.

Last week at the Stones poll we voted on this: Rate the Stones song “Around And Around”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).

Open your eyes, Mick!... “Around And Around”, from the UK’s first (self-titled) EP and the U.S. LP 12x5, both released in 1964.

Of course, this one was rated a 10, taking in 59.4% of the first place votes. To see the full, final results from this poll, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 1,171. Or to see exactly where the song landed in the song rating standings, just click on here: Stones Song Ratings & Standings - List Page 5. Do note that this page’s URL and its title was changed last week to reflect what the page is really all about, since no, it isn’t by any means a Top 10 list page, as most of our other top poll result pages are. Plus, since no other poll listings will ever show up on this page, it made sense to rename the page to what it is and always will be, since in time, we will have a few hundred more Stones songs listed on this page.

Time now to look at this week’s Classic Rock Poll, where we enter week 812 of polling, and for the voting at this one we always run 2 different Rock Polls per week. For this week’s first, main poll, we will vote on this: What's the best Classic Rock song that starts off with either a gong(s), bell(s), or a cowbell? (Part 2 of 3)?

A Gong, a Bell, and a Cowbell

Week two out of 3 of asking this question. For Part 2 we have 26 more songs to choose from. Now, the following upcoming paragraphs will be an edited repeat for those who weren’t here to vote last week. If you were, you can either read it again, or just drop on down two paragraphs and vote!

Now, we aren't looking for the best song with a gong, bell or cowbell playing in it. What we are looking for is the best song that starts off with a gong, bell or cowbell. I came up with a total of 52 such Rock songs, including 13 songs that start off with gongs, 14 that start with bells, 2 that start with both bells and gongs, and another 23 that start their beat off with cowbells. Yet some songs that you might think would be in this poll, aren't, since while one of those 3 instruments might be prominent in the song, it doesn't start off with any of them. T-Rex's "Get it On (Bang a Gong)" doesn't make the list, since there isn't any gong heard in the song (nor are any bells or cowbells heard at its start, but are heard later). One song that's well known and loved for its cowbell, Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper", doesn't make the list either, since the opening to that song is only played on guitar. The Moody Blues' "Late Lament", starting off with its famous gong, also isn't listed since, well, in reality, what you are hearing, while its for sure a gong (and not a tam-tam, even if it sounds like one), is misleading, since the gong is actually heard closing out the preceding song on the LP, "Nights in White Satin".

I should note that I also wanted to list songs starting with tam-tams, but I couldn’t find any listed. Hard to believe, and I bet at least one or 2 that start off using tam-tams are listed as "gongs” instead, since they are very similar in looks and sound, but they are a bit different in the sound that they make, too. So, while I was sure that bands like Pink Floyd and Queen, both used them, well, I could not find any listed, anywhere online.

Okay, it’s time to cast your vote in this first Rock poll. To see the interesting list of songs that we will vote on this week in Part 2, just click on the following link and make your pick: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote in this poll.

Let’s now move on over to the Rock Video Poll. Here's this week's question: Rate Free's live performance for “All Right Now”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest). Click here for the video

Free and one of their single sleeves for “All Right Now” L to R Andy Fraser, Paul Kossoff, Paul Rodgers, Simon Kirke

While the band Free had several known songs, "All Right Now", released in 1971 on their LP Fire and Water, was their biggest and best-known song. Written mainly by the band’s then 15-year-old bassist and keyboardist, Andy Fraser, with some help from their lead singer, Paul Rodgers, the song went to #1 in 20 different countries. In the UK it reached #2, and in the U.S. it peaked at #3. It was rereleased in the UK 2 more times, in 1973, reaching #15, and then again in 1991, reaching #8 on the UK’s main chart. According to drummer Simon Kirke, Fraser came up with the idea for the song after a bad gig that the band had played, but he refused to be down like his bandmates were after the show was over. He just kept saying to his mates that “Everything is gonna be all right now!”. He then, in the band’s dressing room, sat down and wrote 90% of the song in minutes. Kirke noted that it couldn’t have taken more than ten minutes for Fraser to write almost all of the lyrics right there on the spot to this hit song.

The lineup for this one was: Paul Rodgers – Lead Vocals; Paul Kossoff – Lead Electric Guitar; Andy Fraser – Bass Guitar and Piano; Simon Kirke – Drums.

Last week in the first Rock Poll we voted on this: What's the best Classic Rock song that starts off with either a gong(s), bell(s), or a cowbell? (Part 1 of 3)?

and

The Top 2 songs from last week’s voting

The Top 10 songs that made it into the final round are: Hell's Bells - AC/DC (bell) (9%); Down On The Corner - Creedence Clearwater Revival (cowbell) (9%); I Call Your Name - The Beatles (cowbell w/ guitar) (9%); Mississippi Queen - Mountain (cowbell) (9%); Time Has Come Today - The Chambers Brothers (cowbell) (9%); Low Rider - War (cowbell) ( 8.9%); You Make Loving Fun - Fleetwood Mac (cowbell) (8.9%); Poor Poor Pitiful Me - Linda Rondstadt (cowbell) (8.9%); Hair of the Dog - Nazareth (cowbell) (7.5%); Everybodys Workin for the Weekend - Lover Boy (cowbell) (5.5%).

Guess I should note that no, there wasn’t a 5-way tie for first, nor a 3-way tie for second. Even though I only list the vote tally percentages each week for this poll, because of tight voting, first place when to AC/DC and second place to CCR. But then again, since this was only Part 1 of this question, there really aren’t any places to place these songs, only which ones made the top 10 is what counts in 3-part multi week polls. So, to see this poll’s full, final results, just click on the following link: Classic Rock Poll, week 811, Poll 1.

In last week’s Rock Video poll, I asked, and we all voted on this: Rate the Allman Brothers Band's live performance for “Melissa”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest). Click here for the video

The Allman Brothers Band's live acoustic guitar take of “Melissa”

This song saw a 10 for its top rating, as it should have, with a whopping 60.1% of the total votes. You can check out the full results from this video poll by clicking on the following link: Classic Rock Video Poll, week 811. Or, check out the results on the Rock Video list page, where you can see just how high up in the video standings this one reached. Did it make the Top 5? Just click on here to find out: Top Ratings for Rock Videos Page. The Rock video standings are the only thing that’s listed on this page.

Okay, we’ll close out this Poll Post talking about the weekly Beatles Poll, where we enter week 563 of voting. This week’s question will ask this: What was the best cover song ever made of a Beatle song (Part 5 of 5)?

"Yesterday", "I Saw Her Standing There" "Come Together" and "Something" are the 4 Beatle songs that will be listed twice in Part 5 of this poll question

Part 5 – or in other words, the final round of this multi week five-part Beatle poll question, is here. We will have 30 cover songs to choose from, with these top songs being chosen by you (fans) from the first 4 parts of the poll’s question.

Ready to see the entire list of the 30 songs and to make your pick from them? Well, just click on the following link to vote in Part 5, the final round for this very interesting question: Beatles Weekly Poll.

Looking back at last week’s Beatles poll, I asked and you answered: What was the best cover song ever made of a Beatle song (Part 4 of 5)?

A few of the artists who were listed in Part 4 of this poll question

The 8 songs that made it on to Part 5 from last week’s voting were: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - I Need You (2002) 11.8%; Aerosmith - Come Together (1978) 6.5%; Crosby, Stills & Nash - Blackbird (1969) 6.4%; Joe Cocker w/ Jimmy Page - I'll Cry Instead (1964) 6.4%; Peter Frampton w/ The Bee Gees - Getting Better(1978) 6.4%; Willie Nelson - One After 909 (1995) 6.4%; 10cc - Across the Universe (1995) 6.3%; Marvin Gaye - Yesterday (1970), also at 6.5%.

Well with that it’s time to close out this week’s Poll Post.... I finally got to see Part 1 of the 3 part Get Back Beatles’ special film. Turns out that my grandson Cooper has a subscription to Disney Plus that I didn’t know about! I only found this out the other day, after I visited him and his girlfriend, and their beautiful baby girl in their own pad that they just moved into. Yep, the Coop has fled the coop for his very own (and his first) coop! When I asked him why he didn’t tell me he had this Disney service after I bitched that I missed this 3-part Beatle special to him, he told me that he didn’t know it was on Disney Plus, since he isn’t a Beatle’s fan and didn’t watch it. But I did tell him this, which only shows that my boy just doesn’t listen to half of what I say to him! But all kids are that way with their parents, right? Yet I guess it’s my fault, since not only did I raise a kid who doesn’t dig the Beatles, but I was bitching when I noted this to him. I recall that I didn’t pay attention to my dad back in my youth when he bitched to/at me. But heck, I barely ever bitch to Cooper about things, I always had a great relationship with him, so you think he would listen on the rare occasions when I do bitch! I may be getting old, well, as my grandkids like to point out, I am old, but I guess I’m not too old to learn something new, something I should have learned years ago, that bitching is a waste time, at least as far as when you do it to your own kids. But the truth is, I did know that, known it for years actually. I just forgot about it, since I’m old and I forget things.

But as far as Get Back goes, well, I’ve only seen Part 1 so far, and the first part seemed almost exactly like the old Beatle doc Let it Be. I loved the LIB doc, so yes, I love what I’ve seen so far. But since the roof top concert is only shown in Part 3….. well, I assume it’s in part 3, right? I only know there’s more to the concert shown in this special than what the LIB doc showed, so Parts 2 and 3 got to be better! But I’ll find out soon enough. Perhaps I’ll watch Parts 2 and 3, like right now? Or maybe just Part 2?

Let me close this out with some good and interesting news. Researchers affiliated with Oregon State University say that compounds found in cannabis could possibly prevent the virus that causes COVID-19 from entering healthy human cells. Really? Damn, that’s a blast to know!... Just hope it turns out to be true after their study is finally done. If so, you can expect to see a rush of new customers at local pot shops all over America... well, all over in the states where it's legal to be sold!... Gee, perhaps I should start to smoke weed again? It's been almost a year, okay, it was April of last year when I stopped because of breathing issues I was having - and which went away totally when I stopped smoking. So I guess the question is, do I want to protect myself against COVID19 or do I want to breath without gasping for air? Well gasping for air isn't fun at all, but nor is COVID (so I'm told). But I had no fear of the safe vaccination and have gotten all 3 shots, with no side effects or problems what-so-ever! So I guess I don't have to start smoking weed again. But can you imagine when all of these folks who never got vaccinated either because they were too scared to get the shot, or just were too lazy to get it... when they all at once flood all of the marijuana dispensaries? That should be an interesting scene, for sure!

I hope all of you have a great week ahead!
