Whereas I see a lot of problems in the Rock Hall, every business around tries to make money in this world - including all non-profits. I've done volunteer work for such groups in the past including being in charge of one non-profit's fundraising committee - and making money for the organization is always one of the top things all places work on. Without cash flow, you or your business- or your non-profit, doesn't exist, period. So I won't fault them or any place for that reason.
What any business is about and how it's operated - that's what's important here, and there-in lies the problems with the Rock Hall. It's a terribly run place that instead of looking at - in this case for this business - acts that earned a place in the joint, instead it looks at who's in charge of the act, or in other words, who's their manager or what label were/are they signed to. This is why some truly terrible acts that had no business ever getting in - gets in, while some great acts that should have been in years ago - aren't.
In sports, some Halls of Fame have a component where sports writers help choose new entries. These writers don't have much to gain in the process and their vote counts. Does the Rock Hall do this?
Yes and no. Many who vote for new Hall members had no kind of gain by voting for who they do, but unlike say the Baseball hall, for the Rock Fall they let a large number of people vote. It's problem in who gets in each year isn't so much the voting process but the process behind who gets nominated in the first place - and that part of it is about as bad as I've ever heard of for any Hall.
