I wonder why Ed Sullivan would insist on Bo Diddley performing a Tennessee Ernie Ford song? Sullivan was famous for censoring performers song lyrics (The Stones, and The Doors albeit unsuccessfully), and in the case of Elvis for restricting camera range to above the waist. But he was OK with performers doing their own material, with the apparent exception Bo Diddley. I'm speculating this Bo's choice of song might have too "black" for a predominantly white audience.
