I'm not sure if the CD is or will be "officially phased out"
I think we will still be buying new ones even a decade from now. But they do decrease in sales every year and there is no end in sight to this trend. I think that its possible that people being born now will be in their teens one day and will not even know what a CD is, or at least have little familiarity with them. But the thing is that there are Billions of them in existence. So they'll be kicking around for a good while. Plus they will be the only physical format that survives which people serious about listening will want. LPs are great, I enjoy them, but they have no where near the dynamic range of a CD
