Don't Stop/ER/B2B/Acid Guitar/more...

Time to get our weekly poll post underway for our 5 weekly polls, and as usual we will start off with the Stones poll, where we enter week 992, and where we always run 2 different Stones polls in one week for this poll. So this week’s first question asks this: Rate the Rolling Stones video for "Don’t Stop"

This week in the first Stones poll we continue to rate Stones videos, this time with the video for the song "Don’t Stop". DS was a 2002 single put out by the Stones and also showed up as a new song on their compilation LP Forty Licks. Mick Jagger had written this song for one of his unloved solo albums, but after he was all finished in writing it, he was smart enough to realize that it would be a hit only if he recorded it with the Stones instead, so he did just that. The tune just missed making it into the Top 20 charts (at #21 in America anyway, as it didn't do as well in the UK, where it only got to #36). Keith Richards didn't really seem to care for the song and said he had a hard time coming up with a good guitar riff for it, so Ronnie Wood took care of that and played the lead guitar while Jagger also added in guitar work to the song, too.

But besides the song, the main thing we vote on in this poll is the video made for the song, and this one is 100% a true video for sure (unlike some of their stuff from the '60s).

Directed by Sweden's Stylewar team (a directing team of seven men), it's mainly animated and about these three kids (who aren't animated) who are on their way to a Stones concert via car. On the way they keep passing all of these signs, or they make statements (well, not by voice, but by balloon with the text inside) that comes from titles of old Stones songs. When released, some fans looked at all of this as being very corny, yet others totally dug it. Other than the car and kids (and some very short bits of the Stones), everything else for this video came from computer animation.

Yet for the video's ending, I have to ask, why didn't they show the route sign we see at the end as "Route 66" in keeping with what we see throughout the video? What is "Route 03" supposed to mean anyway? This video had them driving in the U.S., and I know of no such road anywhere around the country. But it was all filmed in Sweden, too, but still, they are in the States, as early on they pass the Ed Sullivan Theater in NYC and by the ending they seem to be out west somewhere (one hell of a long drive regardless of where they might be!).

This next paragraph is a repeat from last week… but it’s still important, so let me note it again….: There will be a link to the video in the voting booth so you can view it before you vote. Do remember that yes, we are rating this video for this poll, so where I often say that the videos linked to at the voting booth are only there so you can hear the song before you vote - but don't vote on the video - well for this kind of question of course that doesn't apply at all, as you most definitely should vote 100% on what the video is all about for this question.

To cast your vote in this first poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

The Stones second poll is where we run the Stones album VS matchups each week, and this week’s question asks this: Emotional Rescue vs Bridges To Babylon, which album do you like the best?

vs

This week we return to the very last album VS series held in this series and one that we only got started just a few weeks ago, called "The Very Emotional Polls". Now sometimes two matchups that otherwise might not sound too exciting to run, can be if they are run near the close of a long running series like our Stones album matches. For this week we have that happening, as the host LP, Emotional Rescue, and it's challenger, Bridges To Babylon, are both having very hard times in these matches with identical losing records of only 2 wins and 17 losses, with just 2 other albums seeing worst records, while they sit tied in third to last place in the standings. So something has to give this week and one these LPs will end up with a win when all is said and done (unless they tie, but ties are very rare events in these matches).

To see the song list for each album, for Emotional Rescue, click on: ER, and for Bridges To Babylon, click here: B2B.

To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Looking back at our 2 Stones polls last week, at the first poll we answered this question: Rate the Rolling Stones TV performance/video for 'I Wanna Be Your Man'

Well finally a very good, strong rating of a solid "10' for a Stones video (it doesn't happen as often as you would think), and in fact, this was the best rating any of their video have seen so far (the top pick took in just under 48% of the vote).. To check out the full final results, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 991, poll 1. Or, you can check out and see how all of the other videos that we have rated in the past have done by going here: Stones Fans Top Pick Lists - Page 2, under “Video Ratings”.

Looking back at last week’s second Stones poll, the question was: Tattoo You vs A Bigger Bang, which album do you like the best?

vs

Well as far as I’m concerned, we picked the wrong LP last week, but then again, that actually happens often with me and my lookout on some of the Stones LPs.. So which LP was picked? You can find out by clicking here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 991, poll 2. Or, you can see the final results and check out the updated, current album standings at the Stones VS Page 1.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll, this week we enter poll week 632, and we run 2 poll questions a week at this poll, too. For this week we have a brand new question to ask, which is: Who was the best acid guitar player in rock?

Ever since Dave Davies played the very first acid rock guitar riff ever heard, on "You Really Got Me", way back in 1964, a new sound that would in time metamorphous into heavy metal guitar, was born.

Now for this poll we will not look at psychedelic rock guitarists, just acid guitarists. There is a difference between the two. Psychedelic rock guitarists were of course more mellow players, even if the sound coming out of their guitar was similar to acid guitar. But acid guitar was/is much louder, and where psychedelic rock guitarists grew to be in jam bands (like what we would see in the Grateful Dead), acid rock helped to give birth to the loudest genre ever to behold music, period. Yet most of the 37 guitarists that you will chose from and who are listed in this week's poll, weren't ever heavy metal guitarists, but indirectly they did help in getting that sound going.

So who do you feel was the best acid guitar player? Just click here to make your pick: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

At the second Rock poll this week, known better as the Rock VS poll, we will vote on this question: Tiebreaker poll: The Grateful Dead vs The Rolling Stones, who cut the best cover version of "Not Fade Away"?

vs

This tie took place from a poll held long ago, back in 2013, when The Dead and Stones tied for first place after we first asked this question about the Buddy Holly song.

This is a cover song that the Dead used to play a lot live, perhaps more than any other song (I don't know for sure on that, but ask a Deadhead if that's a fact), and no question, they had this one down pat. Trying to decide which live performance to link the song to in the voting booth was a hard choice, there are so many of them online for this song, so I would say that I more than likely didn't pick the best performance of the song by this band, but I don’t think in this case that matters. If you know the Dead well, you know that overall, they played this song well enough live, and often enough.

Now for the Stones’ video link in the voting booth, you might want to skip the first 2 plus minutes of the clip, because if nothing else, there's no music at all being played. Instead what you have, well, first let me back up here. This one came from 1964, from The Mike Douglas Show, a TV show, and since it was '64, all that people Mike's age cared about was asking rock bands the same most ridiculous questions, like about their long hair, which back then no other guys wore their hair long (yet), and Mike points out that the Stones have longer hair than the Beatles (like…. so what, that's important?). Then if the stupid questions weren’t bad enough, even worst was Mike letting 2 girls from the audience come up on stage to meet the band. This only made the Stones look like a teeny bopper band in doing this nonsense, and these girls are a embarrassment to all Baby Boomers in how silly they reacted. But I blame Douglas for that and not the girls, although I guess I should add that at least he wasn't being rude to the Stones in the same way the drunken asshole Dean Martin did, just a few weeks later on when the Stones were on the Hollywood Palace TV show and the moronic Dino flat out made fun of the entire band. Yeah, this was different times back then on TV, it was okay to have a drunken fool like Dino, who clearly acted like a washed out drunk, hosted a TV show each week while slurring his words, but hell no, men couldn’t be seen on TV while having long hair without the TV host making fun of them.

Okay, so there I go again off subject a bit, and of course the Dead had the same problems the Stones had back in those dark, backwards days. Both bands were ridiculed for their looks, and would be set up on drug busts by cops and the WW2 generation just to set an example to the younger generation as to who was still in charge of things.

But both bands did excellent in covering this song, so in a way I guess that's why I never ran a tiebreaker poll on it, did we really need a clear single winner; just why couldn’t we have 2 winners instead?... But to be honest, this isn’t the first tiebreaker poll run here, and after so many years of running this Rock VS poll, where I don't think I'll ever run out of good new questions for the main rock poll, I am running out of good new questions for this Rock VS poll. It's like, just how many of these questions can you run before the best questions and matchups are all used up? Really, to keep this going I guess I'll have to start up something new - like one rock album vs other rock album battle - just like we do at the Stones VS polls, where that’s old hat. If I did that here I could keep this VS poll going forever (or till week 1,000 anyway).... But would the votes still be there after weeks on end of such questions? Well it worked at the Stones VS poll anyway; so I guess it could work here, too. Time will tell if I do that or not.

So which cover of this song do you like better? To cast your vote, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Looking back at last week’s first Rock poll, it asked: Who was the most underrated member of the original Pretenders?

Well this one wasn’t even close, as James Honeyman-Scott, the band’s lead guitarist and original member, who died young of a drug overdose while still in the band back in 1982, was chosen by a very wide margin. Lead guitar players rarely get chosen when we vote on this kind of question, since they are usually highly rated if not overrated. But the Pretenders were a pretty even band music wise, and I was thinking that Chrissie Hynde might get the nod even if she was the lead singer. But she came in third and way behind in the voting.

To see the full final results from this poll, just click here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 631. You can also check out the results from when we asked this same question for other bands, too, with all of the picks listed together on the top of this page Top Ten Lists, Page, 14, although for this one listing it ain’t a Top 10 list at all.

In last week’s VS Rock poll, we answered this question: “The Last Time” vs “Under My Thumb”, both by The Who. Which cover do you like better?

Somewhat close voting but their cover of “Under My Thumb” was still the clear winner and lead for the entire week of voting. To see by how much it won by, just click here: Rock VS Poll, week 631. You can also check out the final results at the VS Classic poll results page at the Classic Rock site, by clicking here: VS poll page 3, list page 15.

Okay, time to finish up the poll post with the Beatles poll, where we enter week 385 of voting, and ask this new question: Of The Beatles album's title cut songs, which is the best one?

The Beatles had 7 songs that were title cuts, or just 6 if you don't count the song "Hey Jude", which when released was on a current official album of the same name – but it was a compilation album of songs (mainly singles) that were never on their albums before (for the most part). The album was supposed to be called The Beatles Again, and a few rare copies were at first printed with that tile, but Capital Records decided in the last minute to name it instead after the new single that was being released at the same time. So it really was an official title cut while others would still argue that it wasn't. If you feel it's the best song listed but isn't a true title cut, then you shouldn’t vote for it (but I feel that it is one and that's why I did place it on the list). Also, going by that point of view, some will also claim that "Yellow Submarine" wasn't a true album title cute either, since it was released first on the album Revolver (in 1966), then released as a single (it went to #1 I'll add). Then in January of 1969, it was released again as the title cut to the movie of the same name and on the soundtrack album put out by United Artists, making it a title cut only at that time. Only one side of the album contained songs performed by the Beatles, and of those 6 songs, 4 were new ones. So while some might argue this song shouldn’t be listed either - well I have to disagree, while it wasn't a new song (where at least "Hey Jude" was) and the album wasn't a true, 100% Beatle LP, it was still made the title cut of an official Beatles album regardless (IMO).

To vote for the Beatles’ best title cut song, please go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we asked: Of the Beatle songs where Paul McCartney played drums, which one was his drumming best on?

This one was a very close battle, and I was surprised that the winning song in the end was “Back in the USSR”. While I agree this one has great drumming indeed, and yes, the best drumming heard on a Beatles song not to feature Ringo on the drums, the only thing I have to disagree on here is that the 3 remaining Beatles played the drums on the song in different parts. So it wasn’t just Paul playing, and to choose this song over any of the others (where it was only Paul drumming) is kind of saying that maybe Paul wasn’t that great a drummer and he needed help from his mates for his best shot on the drums. That of course wasn’t the case at all, but picking this song for Paul’s best drumming when we hear 2 other drummer on it, just doesn’t seem right to me. But I only have one vote in this poll, too!

To see the poll’s final results, just click here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 383. Plus the top picks will also show up on the Beatles Miscellaneous Listings Page over at the Lennon site.

So that does it for yet another poll post. I guess we’re in the true middle of summer right now, so how’s yours going so far? We had a bad hail storm here today and I was afraid the hail stones might hurt my plants in my veggie garden. But after it was all over they still looked okay for the most part. Anyway, I thank all of you for voting in last week’s and this week’s polls!
