I had a friend over for beers tonight. Like me, he's a huge classic rock fan. We got around to discussing the Beatles and comparing their solo careers. A question we considered was this:
Let's say that the Beatles had never been a band. But that John Lennon and Paul McCartney had their solo careers exactly as they did. Its a bit of a stretch, I know. Because in a way, their solo careers were directly influenced, creatively, commercially, and politically by the The Beatles.
But again, let's just say all we ever had by Lennon and McCartney was their output of solo work. The Beatles never existed.
Would we know Lennon and McCartney now?
Would their solo careers be that memorable and would they be household names?
I'm not too sure. They would likely have had success, but would they be as big a deal as they are based on just their solo work?
We could also ask this of our beloved Stones, and I think answers would be pretty similar.
Any thoughts on this?
