Yeah, I've seen ads for used ones, but buying somebody's very old VCR player, hell, you have no clue what you might get. I'm gonna see if my neighbor up the street can fix my old one for me, which wasn't used a lot at all. I'm not even sure how it broke, other than I didn't use it for about 5 years, and about a year or so ago I tried to play an old tape in it - and it ate it. Then I tried another tape, since the player never had any problems before, and I was thinking maybe the tape was just old, but it ate the next tape I put in, too. So something is wrong with the thing, even though it looks brand new and was hardly ever used in the past.
