RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: Sticky Fingers Live

Around maybe 12 years ago, maybe more, retired rock photographer and old friend of mine, Philip Kamin, sent me a ton of rare Stones VHS tapes, along with a bunch of official releases, some that he never opened himself. He couldn't recall even where he got all of them from, other than half of them he got from collector James K, who around the same time also sent me a few of his extra copies of tapes that he had. This was around the time most people were replacing their old tapes with DVDs. Anyway, I did view all the tapes James sent (nothing too rare), and got around to about half the ones Kamin sent (the real interesting ones). Some of Kamin's weren't rare either, but others totally were, things I never seen before that nobody else more than likely had seen either; they were boots that were never distributed to others, just very rare tapes that nobody else had seen of live stuff. Where these some of those tapes that Bill German wrote about in his book that "Video James" had and would give to the Glimmers from time to time? Well all I know was that James hated to be called that and in reality wasn't, guess it was just the name Bill used in that book, but James also didn't deny that the tapes existed, either, and it made sense that Kamin got his hands on them, as he was close to JK and at the time, and he was known to be the largest private collector of Stones material around (he has since sold at least half of that stuff). I did also exchange emails with Bill over these tapes, and he felt what I had just might be some of what he wrote about, but without seeing them firsthand, he couldn't be sure, either, while James didn't want to talk about them at all.

So I got through about half of them, some very rare stuff indeed, and one of my favorite interviews I've seen with Keith, from around the early '70s, where he talks about rare Stones boots out there and he flat out states that he didn't mind fans having them. I watched that interview and knew I now had some of them myself, and even this interview was super rare, never seen it anywhere else before or since. I still got it stored away somewhere in the house.

A few of these I even shared with fellow Gassers who visited with me here, like Maxmeister and Undercover (Kali, too). I made copies and sent a few that had BJ in them from the late '60s, off to our late friend Gerry Seda, who in turn sent me back some rare boots she had from the '60s.

But no, about half of them I never got to view, and today I have no way of even playing them to see what is on them, since I don't have a working VHS player, and you can't even buy a new one today on the market anywhere that I know of. Guess if I looked around I could find a working old player, but are those old tapes still good today? They say such tapes break down in time. But many of these were never played, either. I bet most would still play okay... well, maybe.
