RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: Vinyl and mono/stereo thoughts

Truth was a monster album, and I can see why a lot of folks thought Led I stemmed from it (to whatever degree). Although I haven't heard the mono of that one, it seems to me that Truth would ideally be better in stereo, due to the echo and backward phasing effects. As I said before, to me, psychedelic music in general seems much more suited to stereo than mono, as long as the mix is satisfactory. On that note, Keno and Fatmo: I get that your preference is that stereo is better, period. But what I'm getting at (want to know) is whether you think there are any actual cases where the stereo mix just wasn't done well enough to be better than the mono mix of certain albums? Be specific. To me, Fresh Cream really hits the mark of mono being better, because the stereo mix is too wonky for me. Granted, I don't know if they have done a new mix on that one in the last 15 years but before that it is just clear to me it was better in mono. So much more balanced and punchy and real sounding.

I will also mention that I thought it was interesting what I read about live music. Namely, that live music is essentially sort of mono. A band as a unit coming from a fixed place (on stage) while you sit somewhere listening, in a fixed place (seat) is basically mono in nature, and this very reason is why it took sound engineers so very long to adopt stereo methods after it really was developed in the 30s! (I'm not an expert, I just started reading about this in the last couple of weeks). But what I read said that stereo was thought of as sound that depicted "MOTION," or sound moving through space relative to yourself in a stationary state. Stereo sound was necessary for motion pictures, for the broadway stage and such, and much less necessary for music only.

As far as the Wenner book goes, no cash is needed, manny! I use the local library for my needs!
