It's really no more than a modern day invention, and you can bet in 50 years time something better will replace it. But yes, it is way better than what we had in the '70s, and while we didn't have the net yet in the '80s, (not for public use yet, anyway), we did have personal computers already out there.
I took my first computer course in '84 and was blown away in what we could then do with such a thing. Now today we take our computers for granted, and they are in everything, even in our cell phones. Recall the the cell phones of the mid '80s that only a handful of people had? Remember how damn big they where? I also recall watching the old movie A Clockwork Orange, from the early '70s, which was set in the future and had Alex sitting on his bed with a very small disc thing he used to play his music with and thinking, will it really be like that in 25 to 50 years time? Well for the most part, yes, it was, big things got real small and compact just as predicted. It was cool to see all of that come to being so. Yet now I realize I won't be around to see what things will be like in another 50 years, but I can imagine and know it will all actually happen and be so at that time.
