Both gave the same and both are really indispensable when considering the Beatles "sound." John was older, had a better voice, and was probably more important in the early days while Paul kept the persistence and drive going in the later days. But neither was actually a slouch at any time, ever, and I sometimes get annoyed that Paul gets as maligned as he still does today in terms of reputation, skills, and love... And while I generally prefer Lennon in terms of my favorite moments of the sonics of the Beatles, Paul was still obviously brilliant and wildly creative (to the point that Lennon was always jealous of it) too, just in a different way. And I'm still not sure that I Saw Her Standing There and I'll Follow the Sun aren't seriously the best two things the Beatles did in the early days. That and I'm Down.
