I went to a Stones show at the old Giants stadium many years ago. Horrible sound. I think it depends a lot on your seating location.
Yep, that's the problem with all rock concerts held in big sport stadiums or venues. If you got front row seats in such a venue (and I have), then the sound is fine, but how often does the average fans get front row seats?
I've never seen the Stones in anything small, I believe the old, now torn down McNichols Sports Arena in Denver was the smallest place I've seen them play (saw them twice there), that place sat about 16,000 if I recall. The biggest place I saw them in was a football stadium in New Mexico, but I had front row seats for that one, so the size didn't really matter. The longest distance away from the stage for me at a Stones show was in Boulder, CO, at Folson Field, we were in the opposite end zone to where the stage was, they seemed like they were light years away. Thank goodness for the binoculars we had with us! Come to think about it, Folson Field might have been bigger than the place I saw them in NM, not sure, as I can't even think of the name of the place I saw them play in in NM, but big stadiums suck for rock concerts, no matter who is playing.
I did see Mick Taylor play in a very small club in Golden, Colorado. I was about 5 to 8 feet from him for the entire concert, couldn't have been any closer... but I guess that doesn't count.
