No doubt, smaller is better.
Unfortunately (well, kinda :) ), I'm too young to have seen them anywhere small.
My favorite venues that I have seen them are Madison Square Garden (several time, not sure exactly, need to check my stubs ... I think four) and the MGM in Vegas (twice). Atmosphere is superb at both locations ... different but great. And of course Vegas is a non stop party.
I went to the show at the TD place (whatever they call it) in Vegas last year. It was cool, but somehow the MGM just has a better vibe.
The big arenas can really suck sound wise. I went to a Stones show at the old Giants stadium many years ago. Horrible sound. I think it depends a lot on your seating location.
