Paul is one of rock's greatest bassist, period! He's also a excellent guitar player, as well as being very good at several other instruments that he plays, too!
Just one note about Stu Sutcliffe. Stu actually never played bass, his bass was turned off when they played live. He joined the band only because he was best friends with John and John wanted his best friend in the band with him. At first John played the bass parts for him on his 6 string, but he was never a great bass player himself, so Paul took that role over, and then Stu, who was suppose to learn how to play his bass in time, gave up and decided to go back to art school. The only good thing the Beatles ever got from Stu (via his mood girlfriend) was the haircut he had, which became "the Beatles haircut" and the start of long hair in rock music.
