When Stu Sutcliffe left the Beatles back in their early Hamburg days, then-guitarist McCartney reluctantly agreed to take on bass duties for the band, since both John and George both said no way. At the time Paul made it clear to the others that he would be staying true to his own creative instincts in that capacity (read: not letting anyone else tell him how or what to play!). Fortunately, that is exactly what he did, and it shows in his playing. I was listening closely to George's "If I Needed Someone" a while back. George came up with a killer 12-string riff in this song, but underneath it Paul's bass is playing another melodic riff that pulls the whole thing together while keeping a steady rhythm with Ringo's drum. That is how a good song becomes great. Paul's take on bass was as vital to The Beatles sound as Brian's excursions were to the 60's Stones.
