RE: RE: RE: Exhibition ism

I arrived twelve minutes before my allocated time of 11.30 (they said we should be there 15 minutes early because there would be a queue - no queue, walked straight in and WOW!!!! It far exceeded my expectations: no wonder it took several years to put together. There were nine rooms with different themes on two floors of the spacious Saatchi gallery.

Like all good art galleries, for a nominal fee (£5) you could purchase an audio guide, which although it repeated some of the things in the exhibition, had some wonderful additions.

I'm always the annoying person in an art gallery who stands back to listen to the entire stories on the audio guide and stare at each painting while lines of people walk past me - this exhibition was a bit different as I had to navigate myself between Stones music playing loudly and artifacts in glass in the middle of the room. I didn't see anyone else standing in corners or leaning against walls to try to keep up with the audio narrative, and I seemed to spend longer than anyone else in each room enjoying all that was to see and hear.

We couldn't take photos, and I'd not expected to be asked for a "review", so this could be quite an inaccurate account - but I'm not a journalist and I'm not charging entertainment tax, so please be kind to me!! LOL!!

Each room had a theme, and they all seemed to be in chronological order - depending on how you walked round the room - though sometimes it just wasn't possible to organise things in such a matter. So, the first room, entitled "Ladies and Gentlemen" was an introduction to the Rolling Stones - I seemed to walk through that room quickly as I read fast when I know the story. Room two was more interesting history, including Keith's tiny diaries opened at one specific page (couldn't read it, not even with a magnifier that I always carry with me), lots of fun artifacts were there too, oh the original contract with Brian Jones from the record company and licences for both Mick and Keith individually for copyright protection, so many interesting things - room three was a replica of Edith Grove - reminded me of lots of places in London where young people lived in the 1960s - quite grotty and I didn't even look at the oven because I didn't have any brillo pads with me - and I'd have spoiled the look for anyone else!! LOL!!! Room four really caught my attention - the recording room - I think this room was where all the guitars were, and there was a whole load of silent photo information on the audio - I had no clue that Ronnie was so influential re the Zematis guitars. There was loads of information about the guitars in the exhibition too - Keith's liking of 5 string guitars and all sorts of information about his liking for alternative tunings, etc. Oh, and in the middle of the room was a simple mixing device with a selection of Stones songs that you could mess around with the vocals, bass, guitars, keyboards, etc., etc. I had fun on that for a few songs, but was aware of lots of other people wanting to have the experience too, so stopped after about 5 songs!! It was great listening to one guitar, then the other, and hearing how they weaved - oh, it was all very interesting, I could bore everyone for ever talking about it!! There was another listening area where people were talking about different aspects of recording different albums - and then there was more on the audio. Then it was time to go upstairs into the film and video room - there were long benches to sit on and I watched Martin Scorsese on a big screen talk on video about a film he made, and recounting Altamont. There was a room dedicated to excerpts from the Stones' music videos and of course around the edge of the room we had information about who directed the videos, when they were released, etc. On to Art and Design - fascinating - not sure if the posters from early 1960s tours were here, but they were amazing - so many incredible bands on the same bill, They don't do concerts like that any more Ronnie.

There were lots of sketches done by Andy Warhol, and some by someone whose name escapes me.

Then onto the costumes - lots and lots of costumes - dates, names of the designers. It was fascinating to see when the costumes were worn and who the designers were - and there was a replica of Mick's 1969 Hyde Park outfit - which I recognised immediately. Then on to the final room - we were all given special tinted glasses before entering and watched Satisfaction on the big screen in 3D - I've never seen 3D before and went into a totally parallel or was it alternative - universe - it was truly amazing, and at times it felt like we were on the stage with the band and at other times it was as if Mick was about to walk into us!! Then a walk down the staircase and into the gift shop, with enough merchandise to buy Christmas presents for a Stones fan for quite a few years! There is an Exhibitionism book in both hardback and soft cover which looked so good that I had to buy one for Keno as well as one for myself.

Apparently Exhibitionism is going to be doing a four year world tour, so my guess is that it will reach major US cities eventually.

I've spent almost an hour writing this review - and I'm sure I've missed out loads!!

So, the bottom line is that it's well worth seeing, and is extremely entertaining and fascinating. I asked how long it would take me to get around the exhibition and was told 1 1/2 hours - I left at 2 p.m., so was there just over 2 1/2 hours - it's unlikely that anyone would need more than three hours to go round it (just in case anyone's thinking of going and needs a bit of an idea of how to plan their day).
