New SF/CSNY/CCR/IWTTY/More

Week 833 of our Stones poll is here and we will ask this: Which new Sticky Fingers (2 CD Deluxe version) bonus track do you like the most? We get to choose from the 10 bonus songs which come on the 2 CD version of the album. I’m assuming that this is the one that most fans are buying today.

Now this is a pretty simple question, that is, as long as you have heard the new reissued album. But for those who haven’t, there is an option in the poll choices so you can still vote in case that’s the case for you, as it would also be interesting to know how many Stones fans haven't heard any of these yet, too.

So, which new bonus song on this classic LP is your favorite? To make your pick and vote, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Stones poll we asked this question: Which reissued Stones album has the best added bonus songs on it: Some Girls, Exile On Main Street, or Sticky Fingers? Some Girls won this one by a large margin, racking in 65.4% of the votes to EOMS’ 32.9% second place finish. The beloved Sticky Fingers album, with its new bonus songs, well, not too many fans chose this one’s bonus songs as their favorite, with under 2% going for this choice. Yet I understand the reissued LP is doing well in sales, even if the bonus songs on it weren’t as good as the ones on the other 2 albums.

You can check out the final results from this poll using this link: Stones Weekly Poll - week 832 .

Over at the Classic Rock Poll, its week 475, and as usual, we will vote in 2 different polls for the week. In the first poll we will ask this: Who was the most underrated member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young? This should be an interesting question with these guys to ask. I've run this question 10 times so far, but this is the first time I'm asking it for a supergroup full of superstars.

CSNY really came about by accident - and also thanks to great timing. Known for their great vocal harmonies, when singing together - they were perhaps the best harmony singing group ever, other than the Beatles, anyway.

The group started out thanks to 2 members, David Crosby and Stephen Stills. Crosby had made it big in The Byrds, playing guitar, singing harmony and occasional lead, and writing many of their songs. But in 1967, for whatever dumb reason (more than one was given), he was fired from the band..... Stephen Stills had been a guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist and songwriter in the Buffalo Springfield, and after that band fell a part in early 1968, he hooked up with Crosby, and the 2 became close friends and started to jam and write together….. Then Graham Nash entered the picture. He was a popular guitarist, singer and songwriter in the Hollies, but he wanted out of that band and was looking for an excuse to leave.... Then one night in late 1968, Nash was attending a party at singer Joni Mitchell's house, when Stills and Crosby, who were also there, sang a new song that Stills had written called “You Don't Have To Cry”. After he heard them sing the song together, Nash asked them to sing it again, this time with him adding in a third part harmony. Magic happened at that moment, as everybody at the party heard just how special the 3 sounded when they sang together…. Nash then had his reason to quit the Hollies and he started to work with the two. They were signed shortly after to Atlantic Records.

The new trio's first album, Crosby, Stills & Nash, was released in May 1969, and was a major hit, with Stills not only playing most of the guitar parts, including all of the lead guitar, but also playing most of the bass for the group…..Then enter Neil Young. Young had also been in Buffalo Springfield with Stills, and he also was a great songwriter, and had been Springfield's main lead guitarist, and had one impressive solo career going for himself around this time. So when word got out that CSN were looking around for a fourth member for the band (they really were looking for a keyboard player), Young was recommended to team up with them by Ahmet Ertegün, the head of Atlantic Records, and whom helped in making CSN happen on the business end. After thinking it over, they agreed to have Young join, and he would only do so as long as his solo work wouldn't be affected and could continue on the side.... Their first gig was on August 16, 1969, in Chicago, and their second was the next night at Woodstock, playing in front of half a million people! Their first album as CSNY, was the masterpiece Déjà Vu, released in March 1970, topping the charts and generating three hit singles.

Since then CSNY has been an on and off deal, with CSN being the more permanent, ongoing group, and also the paring of just Crosby and Nash at times, too. All 4 also have released successful solo albums. A talented bunch for sure!

Last year, Crosby came out putting down Young and his new girlfriend, Daryl Hannah; getting on Neal for leaving his wife Peg after some 35 years together, and then taking a shot at Daryl, too. Well that hurt a lot of people's feelings. After that, a pissed off Young stated that CSNY would never play together again. But then Crosby apologized profusely this past May to both Young and Hannah while on the Howard Stern Show for the remarks he made about them. To this day I haven't heard if Young accepted the apology or not.

But anyway, what a mostly great story these guys have, in other bands, together, and on their own! You can read more on them at the Classic site’s CSNY Bio Page if you like, but now it’s time to vote, and remember before you vote, when we ask this question, it’s only asking for the most underrated member while they played together as CSNY…. So, out of this bunch of purely talented and highly rated superstars, which one was the most underrated? Yep, this might be the hardest question to ask out of any other band, other than maybe in the future when we get around to asking it about another supergroup, like the Traveling Wilburys.

To vote in this week’s first rock poll, just click on: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For this week’s VS poll, we ask this: ’I Want to Tell You': the Beatles' original vs Ted Nugent's cover, which version is better? I've wanted to ask this question for a very long time, but I kept putting it off, since I've never felt like promoting anything that had Ted Nugent's name on it. He is one vile, dirty person who needs if anything, a muzzle placed over his mouth. But then again, I do believe in free speech and he does have a right to believe in the crap he believes in. Plus as much as I dislike the kind of person he is, I do like some of his music.

I guess me not asking this question would be a form of censorship on my part, simply because I don't like the dude's point of view. I can’t allow that to be, and I won’t, so this week, this VS poll question is finally being asked. Still, I bet many will vote against Ted, not because they like the Beatles version better, but because they just can't stand Ted and can't bring themselves to vote for anything attached to him, and that won't be cool, either. So please, only go with the music you hear when you cast your vote in this poll, and just dismiss (for this poll) his stupid, backwards caveman views on most things.

'I Want to Tell You' was written and sung by George Harrison and released on the 1966 Beatles album Revolver. The Beatles original of this song is very mellow and slow paced, and Harrison said he wrote the song to express feelings that many guys have problems in saying when trying to communicate their true feelings on this subject matter to their lady friends.

Ted Nugent covered the song on his 1979 album State of Shock. Nugent didn't sing the lead vocals on this song, as is usually the case with most of his solo work; Charlie Huhn, who replaced Nugent's long time lead singer Derek St. Holmes, did. The song was also released as a promo only 7" single. Nugent's cover is a much more heavy rock song than the Beatles take, and of course features Nugent's hard driving lead guitar, along with the pounding drums played by Cliff Davies, not to mention the wild piano playing by ??? (the keyboardist wasn't credited, at least, I can’t find any info on who it is, does anybody reading this know?).

So which song out of the 2 sounds better to your ears? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: Who was the most underrated member of Creedence Clearwater Revival? Very, very close voting among the guys not named John in the band. In the end, drummer Doug Clifford took first place honors by just sneaking past John’s brother Tom, by a single vote!

To see the full, final results from this poll, click on: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 474. Or you can check out the Top pick from this poll at Top Ten Lists, Page, 11, and also see who we have picked before from the 9 other bands we asked this question about.

In last week’s VS poll, we asked: 'Don't Let Me Down' by The Beatles vs 'Don't Let Me Down' by Bad Company, which song is better?

Close polling is the norm in our VS poll, one reason why it's fun to watch the results to this poll as the week grows old. But I wasn’t expecting a close vote last week when I asked this question, and I’m not at all surprised that the final results showed a major landslide win for the Lennon song, but, the tally for this poll ended up the biggest landslide win ever seen in the VS poll, with the Beatles' song 'Don't Let Me Down' taking in 98.8% of the vote! Yes, the highest percentage ever recorded in a VS poll and only the fifth time the 90% mark or better has been reached. The old record had been 98.4%, also reached by the Beatles just a year and a half ago, when their song 'Helter Skelter', went up against Mötley Crüe's cover of the song. One thing for sure, The Beatles usually do very well whenever they are featured in these polls.

The landslide results to this poll can be found here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 474. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

It’s now time to close out this week’s poll thread, as usual, talking about the Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 228, and we ask one more guitar question about the Beatles this week, which is: From the 3 top songs voted on for best acoustic guitar by each Beatle, which one was the Beatles best acoustic guitar part played This is a redo poll question from 2 weeks ago, since I messed up the first time I ran it by listing the wrong song for George in the poll choices, and only noticing the mistake on the very last day the poll was running. So yes, it’s time to take 2 on this one.

Two of these songs listed this week were voted on in last week's poll when we looked for the best lead guitar in a Beatle song, but this question is a bit different from last week's. The 3 songs we’re looking at this week are: 'Here Comes The Sun', with George Harrison on the acoustic guitar, 'Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)' featuring John Lennon on acoustic guitar, and 'Blackbird', with Paul McCartney playing the acoustic part.

To vote in this week’s Beatles poll and make your pick, please use this link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we asked From the 3 top songs voted on for best lead guitar by each Beatle, which one was the Beatles best lead guitar part played? ‘Here Comes the Sun’, with the Lead Acoustic and Electric Guitars by George Harrison, took first place, with 34% of the vote. Good choice for first, even if I didn’t vote for it myself, but all 3 choices were great, IMO.

To see where John and Paul ended up in the voting, check out the final results here: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 227. Or, you can check out the top pick at the Beatles Miscellaneous page located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

I thank all of you for taking a part in the voting in the many different polls we have here at keno.org, from these four weekly ones, to our non-stop On-Going Polls!
