Tour questions/Repeated lyrics/VS/Movie Fabs

We kick off week 823 of our Stones asking this question: Should the Stones bring back the B stage for their live shows? Well, tour questions just seem to keep popping up here even if I keep thinking each new week we would move on to a different kind of question. But I guess as long the tour question is a good one, why not ask it?

I do like this question, and I always felt the B stage was the best idea the Stones or anybody in rock ever came up with for their fans stuck in the back of the venue. But after a few tours, anything repeated can get old, and perhaps so did the B stage? So do you think it was right to move on to a new stage setup as the Stones have done?

To vote on if the Stones should bring back the B stage or not, click on: Stones Weekly Poll

In last week’s Stones poll we asked: Of the Stones studio's albums, which one would you like to hear them play live, in its entirety? This one turned out to be an interesting question, and in the end, the album I voted for was also the one most other fans went with, that being Some Girls. I can only speak for myself, but if they are ever gonna play an entire album from start to finish, it should be an album they recorded with Ronnie, and this one was the best one they did with him.

Now let’s move on to the Classic Rock Poll, it’s week 465, and as usual, we will vote in 2 different polls for the week. In the first poll we ask: Of the songs that repeat the same lyrics over and over again, which one is best? (Part 5 of 5) The final week of asking this question, and we place all of the top vote getters from Parts 1 thru 4 together to fight it out against each other to see which song that repeats it’s lyrics over and over again worked out best for that song. 30 songs made the final list, and they had to collect 5% or more of the votes each week to make the list. One heck of a list we came up with in the end. To see this finial week’s excellent list of songs, click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

In this week’s VS poll, we ask this: 'The Wanderer' (by Dion) vs 'Melissa' (by The Allman Brothers Band), which one of these 2 songs about a traveler is better?

Each week with the VS questions, we usually pit 2 songs about the same subject title up against each other, or, less often, 2 songs that are total opposites of each other. This week it's a combo of the 2… As we have been using traveling songs in this poll for the last several weeks, and well, both of these songs about rolling stones who travel all over and who have no home but the road itself. However, after that, these 2 songs are totally different. "The Wanderer" is totally upbeat and as wild as any song could have been in 1961, whereas "Melissa" is as mellow as a rock song can be. That and the person in "The Wanderer" is a player who sleeps with lots of different women, while the dude in "Melissa" isn't, "Knowing many, loving none", as one line from the song goes, and "Melissa" may not even be a woman, depending on which story about what the song is about, you believe.

"The Wanderer" was written by Ernie Maresca and originally recorded by Dion in 1961. The story of a travelling man and his many lovers, this was first released as a B side single, but radio deejays realized how good it was and played it instead of the A side, and it took off and became a # 2 hit A side single in early 1962…. A young 18 year old Bobby Keys played the great sax solo on this song, but as noted in the fan comments at YouTube for one of the song’s videos, I'm also not sure if that's Bobby shown in the video (link to this song provided in the voting booth). With the suit and tie and very short, slick hair, it doesn't look like the Bobby Keys us Stones fans got to know, plus if that is him, he looks like somebody several years older than 18, but back in 1961, everybody looked older than they were because of that straight look which everybody had in those days (thank goodness for the Beatles and Stones changing that look in the next few years!). So take a look and tell me if you think if it's Bobby in the video. I think it’s him; it looks like Bobby’s face to me. I do know that there is at least one video of Bobby playing the main sax on the song with Dion, but that one was made a few years later on, whereas this one was the original (oh, and also tell me that guy singing backups on the very far right end, doesn't look like Obama, LOL! He's got the same smile, anyway).

Melissa was written by vocalist Gregg Allman on his brother Duane's old guitar back in 1966, but not recorded and release until 1972 when it showed up on the Allman Brothers Eat a Peach LP. It was Duane's favorite song written by Gregg, but low on cash one day, Gregg sold the right to the song and never got to record it until 3 weeks after Duane died, when he finally got the ownership to the song back. For many years it was believed by fans that the song was written by Gregg about his brother Duane and his motorcycle named Melissa, but according to Wikipedia anyway, that wasn't the case. They quote Gregg as claiming the name came to him in a grocery store of all places’. I like the story about it being about Duane better, but who knows for sure which story is true, but this song became one of the most famous and favorite Allman Brothers songs.

Since I noted about the "The Wanderer" and its cool video, do also check out the video for "Melissa", as it's a live cut from 1992 and is excellent!

So which song out of the 2 will you go with? To cast your vote in this week’s VS poll, click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll we asked: Of the songs that repeat the same lyrics over and over again, which one is best? (Part 4 of 5). 10 songs from Part 4 made the cut to be voted on again in Part 5, they are: Shattered - The Stones (9.8%); Atlantis - Donovan(9.4%); Backstreets - Bruce Springsteen (7%); Do Do Do Do Do (Heartbreaker) - The Rolling Stones(6.8%); Turn! Turn! Turn! - The Byrds (6.6%); Who Are You - The Who (6.4%); The End - The Beatles (6.2%); Tell Her No - The Zombies (6%), Wah - Wah - George Harrison (6%); Money for Nothing - Dire Straits (5.6%).

To see the full results from this poll, click on: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 464.

In last week’s VS poll, we asked: 'On the Road Again’ vs ‘Going Up the County', which one of these 2 Canned Heat traveling songs is better? A very close final result to this question, and as usual in the VS poll, I picked the song that most didn’t pick. To see which song ended up on top, just go here: Classic Rock VS Poll, week 464. You can also check out the final results at the VS results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, just click on: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

Finally we move on to our Beatles’ poll, where it’s week 218, and this week we ask this: Which Beatle acted the best in their movies? This question only applies to Beatles movies and not movies that a Beatle acted in alone.

Which Beatle do you think was the best actor? To vote this week’s Beatles poll and let us know, just use this link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll we asked: George Harrison vs Ringo Starr, who was the better singer of the 2 in the Beatles? If I had known beforehand that such a landslide would take place in the voting with this question, I would not have asked it. I sure didn’t wish to make Ringo look bad and I really think his singing isn’t that bad. But looking at the final poll numbers, he didn’t have a chance against George last week

To see the full, final results, go here: Beatle’s Weekly Poll – week 217. Or, you can check out the final results at the Beatles VS Poll Page, located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

Well today the family and I finally got the dead tree branches killed from last week’s snowstorm cleaned up around the property. Gosh, I had no clue how many branches came down until we went at it, which I guess everybody in town is learning once they tackle the job at their places. I tell ya, I know I’m getting old when I do work like this, at least, I feel old when I do work like this, but at least I’m starting to do things like this again since the last round of surgery, and yes, it still feels good using the old chainsaw, and seeing all of the new firewood we will have for next winter. Around here, dead wood dries out real fast; this wood will be ready by the fall for use, no question about it!

So, did you have a good last week too? Hope so, if not, have a good one this week! As usual, I thank you for voting in the polls each week!
